Does anyone use register cleaners for their Vista machine? Should I use one?

If so, what would you recommend, and if not, why should I not use a register cleaner?

    Thanks in advance...

Go to Windows 7 if you're hellbent on staying with Windows.

Or just switch to Linux :p

As to the question, they just clean up the registry. Doesn't do much if anything in the way of performance.

smashing vista would probably help :). CC cleaner is probably the best one out there, but definitely invest and switch to windows 7 :). Always make a backup if you are making registry changes because programs are automated and make some serious errors while "cleaning your registry".

I might do that, but what is the difference, what are the advantages?

The best thing you can use is AdAware (for free at least). It'll remove any bad strings or spyware that could be running in the background.

I'll give that a try. The only reason I ask about all this is that I'm getting alot of pop-ups that I never used to get when surfing the web.

Might be a difference if you are just running a home computer with no other computers connected to a hub.

However Vista was really...really...really sucky when it came to business and esp with multiple computers on networks. Just so many goofy things that were annoying.

As the others have posted...CCleaner is your best bet. Works nice and you have all kind of settings you can mess with.

I would highly recommend CC cleaner and also Windows 7 manager which has a registry cleaner as well as many many other uses.

You can usually find serial keys to unlock the Windows 7 manager full version floating around on youtube.

The only registry cleaner I ever halfway trusted was Microsoft's own registry cleaner. Of course, it is no longer supported after WinXP I believe.

Vista is crap. They patched the hell out of it to make it better, but Win7>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Vista.

Upgrade and do not do the "Vista to Win7 Upgrade" Do a fresh install.
