Millions of blacks owned slaves in the continent of Africa. :)

But to answer your question, no, I don't believe 96,000 blacks in the USA owned slaves.

Since we want to play this game, how about this question. Would the majority of African Americans who have ancestors who were slaves be better off here or in Africa, if White Europeans have not come in and taken land, expoited the continent and not have drawn geopolitcal boundries that completly ignored traditial tribal boundries and otherwise destroy that social culture.

The number of black slave owners I have seen quoted in multiple sources is around 3700. 275 of those owned slaves for commercial purposes. So out of 4.8 million people you had 275 true slave owners.

    Good question sacase.

Notice just like with the question I posed, I have no answer. At least part of any answer would be extremely subjective. For example, what "better off" means to different people, etc.

This of course takes us full circle to the equally unanswerable question of whether or not the present-day USA would be better off if there had never been slavery here. Don't ask me.

Actually, the number 3700 is not accurate. The goverment listed the number of Black slave owners in the South at 10,000. I noted in an earlier post, that number comes from a census taken in 1860. I have read in other places the number being as high as 13,000. I haven't been able to find a number for Black slave owners who lived in the North.

I use Firefox. However, I think it just gave up on me because it was overworked.

I have seen multiple sources quote 3700 as the number and another poster said 4000, so I think that is a fairly accurate number. I have seen the number of slaves owened by Blacks to be around the 20000 mark. Also, laws in the south were changed in the early 1800s to make it harder for slaves to get freed.

I put this in an earlier post, but I'll type it again since it goes with the last part of your post.

It was a Black slave master named Anthony Johnson who sued and won his case in a Virginia court in 1653 that changed slavery from temporary servitude to lifetime servitude. Thus, this Black slave owner established permanent slavery in Virginia.
