If coaches aren't talking about McDonald's size (he's listed as 6-5 and 260 pounds), they are gushing about his speed. If it's not his blocking ability, the discussion turns to his reliable hands.

This offseason, McDonald said he added weight and reached a new milestone with a 400-pound bench press.

"He brings a different element to the game," Rice offensive graduate assistant David Sloan said. "He's big and strong and fast. He's been in the system long enough that he knows his assignment. Even though he's a sophomore, he plays a lot of times like he has more experience than that."

The developing potential has McDonald being mentioned as a potential NFL prospect. He's also drawn comparisons to former Rice star James Casey, a fifth-round pick of the Texans in 2009.
