He was an ok, solid, NFL player. Shame he wasted a few prime years by being away from the game but I wish him well.

For about 2 seasons he was better than that, but for his career as a whole he was just okay.

He still can play. I bet if he was committed earlier and stayed in football, he could have hit 15,000 yards.

If you liked him more than that, and think he's more than a solid NFL player, that's fine. I just don't.

I definately think he could have been. But solid is where I'd have his career.

Man he had the talent to be an absolute beast in the NFL, and he was for a little while.

Hopefully he's able to find happiness in life outside of football, as the OP said. Solid career and a nice guy.

He was the Herschel Walker of the 2000s, except the blockbuster trade for him somehow paid no dividends for the Redskins.:D

    • Okay, but where is the impact. Emmitt was an impact back.

In 15 seasons Emmitt led the league in rushing 4 times(26.67% of the time), finished in the top 5 in rushing 7 times(46.67%), and finished in the top 10 in rushing 9 times(60%).

In 11 seasons Ricky led the league in rushing 1 time(9.09% of the time), finished in the top 5 in rushing 1 time(9.09%), and finished in the top 10 in rushing 4 times(36.36%). Two of those top ten finishes were right at the #10 spot.

And you can't dismiss the time Ricky missed due to his recreational drug use. That matters. Time away from the field is time not helping your team. He had a 13 year career that was shortened to 11 years due to his choices.

All and all he was an okay back. He had a brief moment(2002) when he was great, but for the most part he was just okay. And I am a fan of his. He just never put together more than an okay career.

the biggest problem was injuries early in his career, but make no mistake, prior to his 2 years out of the game, when he was on the field he was the best player and a difference maker. Also emmitt had talent around him while ricky was pretty much on his own in both NO and Miami(before he left). when he came back he was pretty much just a back up and still managed to have a thousand yard season while splitting with ronnie brown.

I just believe solid is an understatement for a back that reached 10000 yards, especially while being a back up for the last 4 years of his career. in 02 and 03 when he was getting 400 carries he was the only reason those teams won any games

He had a solid career. Injuries prevented him from having a great career.

That's too bad, I thought he could of played a couple more years if he wanted to.

Didn't really care for him too much after he got suspended, left the NFL, part Dolphins fan, but was glad he came back and was successful his second stint in the NFL.

Good luck Ricky whatever you do next.

I don't know much about his upbringing, but his struggles late in life are his own doing. If you can't put down the kush, it's your own fault imo. I still like the guy, but he had a ton of god given ability and, to some extent, wasted it. He's a pothead who could have done a lot, lot more.

Agreed. Made me a fan of him.

if you saw run ricky run then you know about his upbringing, also you know it wasn't about pot(him leaving the game) it was about him being run into the ground and not having the will to do it anymore, the only reason he came back at all was because he basically had no choice due to the money he owed from his signing bonus and what not
