An NFL scout told Brad Briggs that Purdue DT Kawann Short "doesn’t play as hard as you would like, not regularly."
"Now, there in the Senior Bowl, he played his a** off," the scout said. "Why did he play hard? Maybe it goes back to mentality. Are you that guy? You are rolling the dice with this kid but let me tell you, he is talented, real talented." The scout went on to add that Short can play across the defensive line but he needs to harness or heighten his motor.

Maybe it was the constantly losing at Purdue. Love to get him at 47 after getting a cant miss OL in round one.

He won't be there at 47. COuld very well be drafted in the first round.

I am not in any way a fan of the crap conf that is the B1G.

I have no love for Purdue.

But this kid can flat out play. He showed zero motor issues at the SB.
As to why... well perhaps he got in better shape since it is now a full-time job for him. Could also be because the B1G passes the ball about once a series.

I'd love this guy even at 18.

He is big, explosive and has natural pass rush moves. Elite prospect.

If he went to Bama he'd be a top 5 pick right now.

I think he will fall because of his motor and teams will pass on him. Thinking he is only a pay to show player. He will play hard when its time to win the game but will disappear if the team is losing or he is having a bad game. The part teams are scared of the most, is his pay day. He won't play to his potential until contract year and then he will be lights out and then disappear again after pay day.
I have read wear alot of people are comparing his motor to Hayensworth.

If you look at his stats for the last two years they are better, and in many cases considerably better, than all other DT's.

    TKL 97; TFL 33; Sacks 13.5; PBU 6; Int. 2; Kicks blocked 5

Got to have some kind of motor to get those stats. I saw two 2013 mock drafts today that had him as Dallas pick in first round at 18th.

I saw on another site where they showed all the splash plays of the current DTs in the draft over the last two years. Short was the highest each year and a higher average than any other DT in this draft. I would love to have him at 18. Look at some of my post from last year and I was talking about this kid.

I'd take Short at 18, for sure.

So would I, but he wouldn't be my first choice. I'd like a trade down, get an extra high round pick and take whoever drops to us.

How far down would you be willing to go, and who would you hope to get there?

Likewise. He'd probably be my third choice.

I would have Sheldon Richardson above him, Xwalker made a great post about Kiffins defense:

    Top Players for Kiffin's defense:
    6-3 320 Star Lotulelei
6-3 295 Sheldon Richardson: Character issues?
    6-3 308 Kawann Short: Work-Ethic issues?
6-3 303 Sharrif Floyd: It's a toss up between him and S. Williams.
    6-3 313 Sylvester Williams
6-2 294 Jordan Hill: Good gap penetrator but anchor is questionable.
    6-3 295 Bennie Logan
6-5 328 Montori Hughes: Quicker than I expected but not as strong.

Not a good fit in the scheme, IMO(XWalker).
6-2 341 Brandon Williams: Would need go from 341 lbs to about 325 lbs.
    6-3 320 Jesse Williams
    6-4 359 John Jenkins
    6-3 320 Johnathan Hankins
    6-5 355 Kwame Geathers

I wouldn't hate getting him at 18 and then picking up OL in the 2nd...

Ideal scenario might be resigning Spencer, trading down, selecting Short, then going OL and OLB in the second, and picking up a safety in the 3rd.

"Motor" issues scare me more than off-field issues.

    See MartyB vs Michael Irvin/Dez.
