    • Pick No. 28: Seattle Seahawks select Lawrence Jackson, DE, Southern California

Pro analysis: The Seahawks obviously feel the edges of their defensive line needed more patching than the middle. Patrick Kerney is solid at one end, but Jackson could man the other side and make Darryl Tapp, who struggles vs. the run, more of a situational pass rusher. Tapp could become deadly — think Denver's Elvis Dumervil — by playing only on passing downs.

College analysis: It is no surprise that Southern California now has four players taken in the first round. Lawrence Jackson is another four-year starter to go high in the draft. The defensive end started 51 of 52 games and had 30½ sacks during his career and has the ability to get after the quarterback in the NFL with his athletic skills.

    • Pick No. 38: Seattle Seahawks select John Carlson, TE, Notre Dame

Pro analysis: Many mock drafts had Seattle taking Dustin Keller — chosen by the New York Jets in the first round — so they go in a different direction with Notre Dame's John Carlson. TE has flummoxed this franchise, with Marcus Pollard failing to fill the bill last year. Before that, Jerramy Stevens' promise went unfulfilled for years. With Deion Branch coming off a torn ACL and D.J. Hackett in Carolina, Matt Hasselbeck needed a new option.
