Should we keep Collins at the 3 and let Crawford rotate at the 1

I'm not sure that Crawford would be open to that. Based off his instagram, I think he fancies himself as a pass rushing DE.

I fancy him as a 3T, who got outplayed by a rookie last season. Irving is the better strong end.

Randy did three camps for me a few years ago. Great camps and great guy.

Randy and Bob were the 2 greatest D-lineman in Cowboy History.

I'm not even sure about that.

They've gotten themselves so far into this bad contract that it's even costly to get out of it next year, to the tune of over $7 million. It's an epically bad deal.

Maybe they bite the bullet and just designate him a June 1st cut next year and spread the hit over 2018 and 2019? That is if his salary isn't guaranteed in early March like it was this year.

We just have to wait it out and hope he plays well. No alternative at this point.

I just don't want to see him given a starting role because of that contract. Two wrongs don't make a right.

As much as I agree Crawford is overpaid, he was our most consistent DL (other than Collins) and got high PFF grades. Here's how I think it shakes out for this year (next year, he's a goner):

    First and second downs:
    LDE: Crawford
    3-Tech: Collins
    1-Tech: Thornton
    RDE: Lawrence/Taco

    Third downs:
    LDE: Irving/Taco
    3-Tech: Collins/Irving
    1-Tech: Crawford/Paea
    RDE: Lawrence/Taco

I say this over and over so sorry for the repetition...

    LDE got him drafted.

We ballooned him up to play a 3-4D.

Then made the switch to 4-3 and thought "yeah he has the size for the interior"

Just let him get back to a normal weight and his natural position.

I wouldn't mess with Collins at all. Coming off an injury he had 5 sacks his rookie year. Let's see what he can do with a full offseason under his belt.

Man Collins had 5 sacks as a rookie...why not keep him at the same position and let him bloom. We keep on switching guys back and forth. Need some continuity

Collins was great last year. Nice pickup in the 3rd round.

Not that any of us know how this will play out at this stage, and yes, will defer to the coach's - but .....
Until Crawford can show he is fully recovered from his surgeries, he backs up Collins. We have a logjam at DE's and I think Irving is going to take LDE and run with it. Rotating Crawford with Collins wont wear him out and maybe by playing in that rotation will allow him to stay/become more constant.
Crawford is a perfect example for all the wrong reasons of the " Position flex" mantra. For all the potential/promise he has shown, the constant movement he has gone through has hurt him. Plus the constant changing of his body up and down to accommodate the position changes.
The big contract deters from peoples perception of him, but I think the coaching staff - weather by need or scheme change, have hurt, stunted his development.
Let him backup and rotate behind Collins and the staff will have to assess him and his contract next off-season. (I see him hear for at least 2 more years, and playing a rotational role may actually help him).
A 3/4 D-lineman in college and his first year here, then the change to a interior lineman, when the changed schemes, where he beefed up to play that, then slim down to play 4/3 end. Then now they wanted him to play both end and 3-tech. No wonder his struggles.

Still see people having unrealistic expectations for what a SDE can do.

I completely agree. He was the 3rd or 4th best DT last year.

Collins, McClain and Irving (when he played at DT) were all better than him.

Broaddus is an idiot. Maliek is no where near his best 2 gapping or holding his ground against the run, even tho he's built like a nose, he's style of play is best suited to firing off the ball towards QB.
