Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said rookie running back Joseph Randle has played better than his numbers indicate.

Randle’s role could be heightened with the loss of Lance Dunbar to a knee injury. But Randle has not carried in the past two games and carried only once in the game before that. Before that stretch, he carried 44 times for 108 yards (2.5 average) and one touchdown in three games.

“I know his numbers might not indicate that, but he went in and played football at this level,” Garrett said. “Sometimes, when a rookie goes in there, on his first opportunity to carry the ball for an extended period of time, he seems young, seems like maybe a college guy, and it might be a little bit too big for him. Joseph has never had that way about him.”

Randle said he has tried to stay sharp despite the relative inactivity the past three games.

“Practice is kind of like a game for a guy who doesn’t get in,” he said. “You practice to keep you skills sharp.”

He agreed he has an opportunity ahead of him.

“I’m just going to go in there and make plays and do what I’ve been doing since I was 3,” he said.

Garrett said Randle has learned from his rookie experiences.

“He hasn’t played perfect football. But we have a lot of confidence in him,” Garrett said. “He’s a big guy. He runs downhill. He’s got good vision. He’s tough. And he’s done a good job with the football. If he has an opportunity to play, we expect good things from him.”
