What would have been the down side to signing Sean at the end of the season vs. now?

Why would the cost increase that much over 18 weeks (i.e. before the end of the season / FA..)?

Because you run the chance that he has a monster year, and then the price certainly goes up.

Dallas also gets to account for 20% of his 10m signing bonus this year. That leaves only 8m in dead money and allows for easier restructures down the road when they need some space. Putting a player at ease mentally cannot be overlooked as well. Lee has achieved financial security and can focus on football only and won't have to deal with questions about his contract.
