    Think again.

Rivera to observe Cam Newton's workout in person

    3/7/2011 11:55:15 AM

Panthers coach Ron Rivera is expected to be there to eyeball QB Cam Newton -- and ostensibly DT Nick Fairley, though he's not thought to be in the mix for the top pick according to Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer.

Rivera raised more than a few eyebrows with his effusive praise of Newton at the combine, comparing his size and strength to successful QBs such as Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco.

Is size and strength really the question with Newton?

No, it's his character and ability to actually play QB in the NFL that are in question.

No way in HELL would I draft Newton anywhere near the top 10 picks.

My question was rhetorical. I thought it was funny to read that Rivera's aim was to see how Newton's size and strength matches up to Ben an others.

I'd be shocked at this point if Cam wasn't the #1 pick

I'm in shock that someone would actually consider him in the top 10.

I still think you all are underestimating Newton.

The guy is a phenomenal talent, but he isn't an NFL QB. Plain and simple. This isn't a QB run first league.

I agree but he has the talent to turn into a very good nfl Qb.

Also, I don't think JC will be a franchise Qb in Carolina so they may look to take Newton imo.

I agree that I wouldn't spend a top 10 pick on him. But like I said, I'd be shocked if Carolina didn't take him

I vote Hos to be the Panther's honorary GM for until after the draft. Let's wrap this Cam Newton thing up!

With the right coaching he could be insanely good at QB.

I thought Vick was basically Quincy with 4.3 speed at ATL.

Reid turned him into a damn good QB after being out of the league for a few years.

It's amazing it could be done at all, but factor in the time in prison and it's even more amazing.

Is Rivera the coach to groom Newton? Not sure who their OC and QB coaches are.

I think they're just doing their homework, I still find it hard to believe they will end up taking him #1 personally.

Age, maturity and a little humbling probably went a long way toward Vick accepting the role he is playing now. I don't think anyone would want to draft Cam if they felt it was going to take years to develop him as an NFL type QB.

I personally don't think Cam is as much of a run first QB as Vick was coming out of college, so i don't think it will take as long to see what he can become.

You don't take a project with the #1 overall pick. It'll be a blunder as big as the Jumongous Russell pick if they do it.

It's a sucky year to pick first. The good news is you need help just about everywhere. Trade down if you can, if not, get the best guy on the board and look to the second round. Don't reach and destroy your cap and waste the next three years trying to prove yourself justifying the huge contracts you're paying out.

bottom line is that thsi is a QB driven league

i would not be surprised if carolina goes QB # 1, whether it is cam or blaine remains to be seen
