EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Week by week since early October, the Dallas Cowboys had repeatedly been charged with football felonies, including the harshest indictment of all, a failure to compete at even the base level of intensity.

Then came Sunday afternoon in the New Jersey swamps.

Play hard, play on despite injury shortages, play smart, don't get covered in yellow hankies, maybe catch the Giants a little cocky, and in the end, slap a stunning 33-20 defeat on the team many were calling the best in football through the first half of the NFL season.

Throw around all the theories you want about what suddenly transformed the Cowboys into respectability, and that would obviously start with the ouster last week of the easygoing former head coach and how his replacement went boot camp on this team in only five days.
    But that's too convenient.
