KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan and NATO-led troops killed two regional Taliban commanders in southern Afghanistan, and an explosion in the same province claimed the life of a British soldier, officials said Thursday.

"As a result of this successful attack (on the commanders), the Taliban's networks have suffered another severe setback," said Brig. Gen. Carlos Branco, a spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force.
The joint NATO-Afghan forces killed commander Mullah Abdul Matin and his associate, Mullah Karim Agha, in the southern province of Helmand on Monday, the alliance said in a statement.

NATO said Matin and Agha were behind several suicide bombings in Helmand, the world's largest opium poppy producing region.

The Taliban did not immediately confirm the deaths. (really? I guess their communications officer was unavailable. :lmao2: )

Elsewhere in Helmand an explosion killed a British soldier and wounded another Wednesday, Britain's Ministry of Defense said in London. It said the wounded soldier was treated for minor injuries.

The blast hit as a British patrol was trying to disrupt Taliban activity, the ministry said in a statement. The cause of the explosion was not immediately known, it said.

The death brought to 89 the number of British service members killed in Afghanistan since the troops were deployed there in 2001.

Meanwhile, authorities in neighboring Kandahar province detained seven men suspected of involvement in a suicide bombing that killed more than 100 people Sunday at a dog fighting competition in Kandahar, provincial Gov. Asadullah Khalid said.

The bombing, which targeted a militia leader who opposed the Taliban, was the deadliest insurgent attack since the Taliban's ouster in 2001.
Afghan intelligence agents detained the suspects in two separate operations Wednesday, Khalid said.

Insurgency-related violence in Afghanistan killed more than 6,500 people in 2007 — the deadliest year since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001, according to a tally of figures from Afghan and Western officials. Most of the dead were insurgents.

I think you are right it is 72, but at the rate they are falling they may have to reduce that number or settle for almost virgins.:laugh2:

I guess you guys like to believe everything in the media. I wish people would use their heads and think for themselves for once instead of believing that the media, which lost its objectivity a long, long time ago.

What's funny about assuming people's motives in killing someone is tied to something falsely ascribed to their religion?

    Get a sense of decorum.

Its 80,000 servants and 72 wives.

But this is from the hadith, traditional sayings traced with varying degrees of credibility to Muhammad, not in the Koran.

I forget. Its ok to make fun of Islam and their beliefs?....

But if I take a shot at Christianity (as a confirmed Christian), its wrong? I only ask because I want to make sure I don't cross the line and get warned.

I think people were making fun of terrorist in this thread, and what they believe.

Most of us do not think the crazy crap terrorist believe is the same as an ordinary Muslim.

    Just for further clarification:

"This is as a weak Hadith that has no Sanad — line or sequence of narration. Although listed in an authoritative collection, this particular Hadith has technical weaknesses in its chain of transmitters and is therefore not considered impeccable. As a result, Muslims are not required to believe in it. Even if the Hadith was true, there is nothing about it that says that if someone commits suicide they would get 72 virgins in paradise."

hmmm looks like virgins to me.....

    Koran http://www.submission.org/suras/sura56.html sura 56 12-39

the hadith gives them between 70-72 virgins and an eternal dose of viagra

Two points need to be noted. First, there is no mention anywhere in the Koran of the actual number of virgins available in paradise, and second, the dark-eyed damsels are available for all Muslims, not just martyrs. It is in the Islamic Traditions that we find the 72 virgins in heaven specified: in a Hadith (Islamic Tradition) collected by Al-Tirmidhi (died 892 CE [common era*]) in the Book of Sunan (volume IV, chapters on The Features of Paradise as described by the Messenger of Allah [Prophet Muhammad], chapter 21, About the Smallest Reward for the People of Paradise, (Hadith 2687). The same hadith is also quoted by Ibn Kathir (died 1373 CE ) in his Koranic commentary (Tafsir) of Surah Al-Rahman (55), verse 72: "The Prophet Muhammad was heard saying: 'The smallest reward for the people of paradise is an abode where there are 80,000 servants and 72 wives, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine, and ruby, as wide as the distance from Al-Jabiyyah [a Damascus suburb] to Sana'a [Yemen]'." Modern apologists of Islam try to downplay the evident materialism and sexual implications of such descriptions, but, as the Encyclopaedia of Islam says, even orthodox Muslim theologians such as al Ghazali (died 1111 CE) and Al-Ash'ari (died 935 CE) have "admitted sensual pleasures into paradise". The sensual pleasures are graphically elaborated by Al-Suyuti (died 1505 ), Koranic commentator and polymath. He wrote: "Each time we sleep with a houri we find her virgin. Besides, the ***** of the Elected never softens. The erection is eternal; the sensation that you feel each time you make love is utterly delicious and out of this world and were you to experience it in this world you would faint. Each chosen one [ie Muslim] will marry seventy [sic] houris, besides the women he married on earth, and all will have appetising vaginas."

Besides, Martyrs are not committing suicide, they are dying for jihad, the highest honor.

Actually, the Qur'anic term used is transliterated as "zawjun" or "hur" which means spouses or pure companions, as in husband or wife, and refers to the opposite partner of both sexes. In other words, both males and females will be granted "pure" spouses.

"Jihad" is the arabic word that is correctly translated as "struggle", as in to struggle in the way of God. It applies to both fighting in God's cause, which is termed as the "lesser" jihad, as well as to fighting the self-delusions of one self, or against the evil inclinations of one self, which is termed as the "greater" jihad.

As for the hadith's authenticity, I already pointed out that it is described as one that is "daif" in Arabic, or "weak" in it's authenticity. Hadiths are compilations of the sayings and actions of the prophet that were recorded 150+ years after his death. Very few of the hadith in the compilations (around 10 - 15), some Islamic scholars say none, are described as "mutawattir", which in Arabic is the term used to describe hadiths of the highest authenticity. For example, the Qur'an, although not a hadith per se, is considered "mutawattir" because at least seventy of the prophet's companions agreed upon the text as is and transmitted it to others who memorized it themselves.

As for the interpretations of some previous commentators, they're exactly that: interpretations. Describing a member of paradise as seemingly having an eternal erection has no basis in the literature whatsoever. In fact, I would highly question any such interpretation, as if heaven is some gigantic orgy, an interpretation that has little, if anything, to do with the mode of thought that is inculcated by the religion itself which describes itself as "the middle way".
