    Apr 7 - Re-signed: Pat McQuiston (2010); Birthdays: Patrick Crayton (WR: 2004-09, b. 1979), Tony Dorsett (RB: 1977-87, HOF: 1994, b. 1954), Ron Francis (DB: 1987-90, b. 1964), Kevin Smith (DB: 1992-99, b. 1970)

Trivia: the Cowboys traded up to take Dorsett with the #2 overall pick in 1977; why didn't Schramm trade all the way up to #1 to take Dorsett?

Because Tampa selected Ricky Bell, leaving Tex scrambling to take advantage of such a huge opportunity at 2...?

You're on the right track -- the trade was made before the draft and Schramm assumed TB head coach John McKay would take his former USC RB Ricky Bell, leaving the Cowboys free to deal with Seattle.

Ah right. I sort of remembered that Ricky Bell going to Tampa was pretty much a foregone conclusion, but forgot the details. Thanks. :)
