Tyron Smith drops out of Combine
Posted by Mike Florio on February 26, 2011, 10:08 AM EST

After participating in the bench press on Friday, USC offensive lineman Tyron Smith abruptly has decided to drop out of the remainder of the Scouting Combine events.

The news comes from Steve Wyche of NFL Network.

The reason for the decision isn’t known. The last “Saturday surprise” at the Combine came two years ago, when reports emerged that receiver Michael Crabtree would not participate due to a foot injury that required surgery.

Smith is rated as one of the top offensive line prospects in the draft.

    Got hurt during the interviews.

Seriously, this guy scares me. His stock climbed too fast, now he bails. Never played LT in college.

And Solder is tearing it up today.

    It's not "now he bails".

He was never going to run.

It would be ******** to do so.

Dude had knee surgery 8 weeks ago.

Happens every single year with multiple guys at the combine.

Some guys lift only because of a lower body injury.

Some guys run only because of a shoulder injury.

People need to stop wetting the bed after every headline they read.

I agree but solder bench press scares me, never played great vs top talent in college and his arms aren't as long as you would like for a 6'8" player.

Carimi and costanzo are looking better and better to me.

I don't think this guy is as good as folks think. Simple as that. An under weight RT and everyone thinks he should be a top ten pick. Just don't see it.

he could still do the drills

he has a high stock now so why look bad doing the drills and have your stock drop.

I don't blame him for dropping out but it just makes me not wont him even more.

He was out at LT for two weeks and then moved back to rt because he couldn't pass protect vs a weak pac 10.

Give me 4 year starters that are proven, strong, and are looking great in the drills.

Give Carimi or Castanzo. Both can play RT now, with some work and developing can be moved to LT in a few years.

Jammal Brown was just a RT at Oklahoma then went to the PB twice as a LT for the Saints.

The word all along has been we wouldn't see much until his campus work-out. This isn't shocking or even surprising in the least.

He had his knee scoped about 8 weeks ago . . . . He wanted to work out but it started swelling up, so he's working out at his Pro Day on March 30th (think that's USC's Pro Day).

considering this was covered by another thread HOURS ago, this thread is a perfect example of what is wrong with the Boys fanbase. Ignorant posters; and dumb ones as well.

As for the gain i have also read he put it on with a special diet monitored by a specialist so it's not flab or anything like that and he's being described as ripped body wise.

Smith being able to maintain this weight is my biggest concern. He has had problems keeping his weight up in the past. Even at 307lbs , he is still on the small side for an NFL tackle. During this last preseason , fans were worried about Doug Free being too light at 315-320lbs. Smith is the hot pick this week , so concerns are overlooked.

I would think by the time he's 21-22 years old he could add 10-15 lbs of quality weight. He's not going to be Flozell's size, but few guys are.

Is he going to be ready to start Day 1? I have no idea. By mid-season? Possibly.

Smith could turn out to be a fine player , but he there is no evidence that he is a elite LT prospect or that he can maintain his weight. He has the tools but there is a reason that he was moved to the RT position. I was sure that he would come into the combine over 300lbs. If he was under 300lbs , it would cost him millions of dollars. I would have packed on a few pounds myself for that kind of money. I just see several questions that are unanswered when it comes to Smith and I don`t consider him a sure thing , like some of the other posters. With the 9th pick , I want a player that is close to a sure thing as possible.

So what player is that in your opinion - who we can reasonably land at 9?

probably a trade down guy. I get sick to desth of reading lets trade down. You go to forums of all 32 teams and its all you ever read, lets trade down and rip somebody off for an extra 2nd.

A quick read of several posters' concern on this forum . . . .

Cam Newton - can't read a defense, only done it for 1 year, a lot like Vick except bigger and not a "true" QB, etc., etc.

R Quinn - Didn't play last season, so you're depending on the year before. Character concerns? Could we use him with Spencer . . . .

Prince - Doesn't have the 2nd gear, played poorly against top competition

C Jordan - Light in the pants, don't spend a high pick on a 34 end

P Peterson - more of a Safety than a CB, a lot of hype

Fairley - Again, not as much tape on him, character concerns

There really are no givens when you pick. No sure things.

At this stage, every player has warts, real or perceived.

T Smith has his questions as well, of course, but which player doesn't?

Depends on who is there at 9. I would like to see the line addressed , but only with a trade down. It seems like most of these linemen have questions about them. Peterson, Miller, Quinn and several others have questions but they are not a project player like Smith. As far as linemen, Carimi and Sherrod are the closest thing to being sure things IMO , but I would like to see a trade down before drafting them.
