I think Spencer would be better but I think Crawford can play there and will be better than some think. JMO.

Crawford has anything but a roly poly body. He has more a long, lean body type. The real question coming out of the draft was whether he would be too undersized to play 3-4 DE.

Could he get up over 300 lbs.? Yes. Would it be his natural playing weight? Hardly. If you let his body build naturally, he'd be in the 275-285 range.

Nothing "roly poly" about this. He looks like a classic 4-3 LDE.

Good descriptive term for Crawford... "not athletic enough to play DE in this scheme".

    I agree.

Yeah, guess I have been saying this alot, I just don't think he will do well on the edge in the NFL.....would be great if I'm wrong cause we have nothing at DE right now other than Ware, but it is just the truth.

Right now, we just have alot of DTs and not enough DEs at all for the 4-3, heck we were already low in outside pass rushers anyway......the scheme change actually makes the situation even worse.

If this is true and the staff also thinks Crawford can't play on the outside, and we let Spencer walk.....we really have no choice but to use a first rounder on a DE, and I'm one that hates need in the draft so I wouldn't be a happy camper.

You say this in one post then...

    This in another post.

    Quit contradicting yourself, Baddie. ;)

Seriously though, Crawford would do fine at DE in a 4-3. He's more athletic then you give him credit for.

Exactly. In college. He will not be a DE in the NFL. Not a good one. I wouldn't even want him as a "Pass rush specialist" cuz he's not a very good pass rusher.

Yeah I see Butler more as a Singleton type then a 4-3 edge rusher.

It's not 2003. It's 2013. Tight ends are faster and used more in the passing game. Tell me how big Nick Roach is on the bears... hint 234 lbs.

You can have bigger defensive ends, but the point is the line itself needs to get after the QB. If we don't have a Warren Sapp, you're going to need better defensive ends to get after the QB. FYI, we don't have a Warren Sapp.

I'd say he is. Look at his sacks per snap, and I'm guessing he is a more efficient pass rusher than Ware.

He would actually be a better fit at WDE in the 4-3-under than an SOLB in Rob Ryan's defense.

Compare Seattle WDE Bruce Irvin to 2012 SOLB Anthony Spencer.

Having said the above, I don't expect Butler to be great at any position. He is not a great run player near the line and he does not have the speed of an off-the-line LB.

Interesting thing to me is I expect Hatch to do a Spencer and have a career year at 3 tech to get paid. Course we will lose him and probably plug in Crawford at that point, but I don't think we will be hurting at that position.

The grumpy old men crew we have up front for this new 4-3 needs a total overhaul though, but we will have to make them last long enough til we have time to pick up all the replacements.

Dan Connor is too slow in any defense.

Im willing to bet now Dallas doesnt even have G on its draft board in round 1.

DE will be the pick. I guess you cant really blame them with the talent that will be avail this yr at DE. Disappointing news tho.

Tyrone Crawford is your protoypical SDE. If he can stay in that 275-280 range he has enough quickness to play that role very well whilst remaining stout at the POA. Good length as well to bat balls down.
I see him as our starting SDE in september unless we go after say michael bennett or draft ansah

You can see him as anything you want. But what the Dallas Cowboys are saying is they envision him as a DT.

Yeah, this is the part that is being ignored in this thread.

Yep. If Red Bryant can play SDE at 320 lbs then Crawford can do it at 290.

I'd love to see him as the SDE in our base defense with Spencer at Sam. NO ONE would run to that side.

THen on passing downs have them both move down a spot (Crawford to DE/SPencer to DE).

Having SPencer at Sam would open things up for us as far as blitzes as well.

And the cowboys have NOT said "Crawford will be a DT". We'll see what Kiffin does with him, but I'd prefer a more Seattle type Tampa 2 to an old Original Tampa 2. But even then, I think Crawford can be every bit the pass rusher Spires was and a helluva lot better fun defender at the same time.

All I've seen is Jerry say that he could see Crawford at a DT. Not that he WILL be a DT.

Them even mentioning it kinda tips their hat on how they see him. Probably a player better suited to provide pressure inside because he cant really provide it outside. And that basically sums up what scouts thought of him coming out of college. Thats why 3-4 teams were looking at him. Stout against the run, but limited.
