I recently started looking for a watch and have no idea what to really look for :laugh2:

Are there any watch connoisseurs on here that can explain to me the technology in them these days? And also, maybe some advice on what to buy?

I'd say I'm mainly looking for a dress watch and could go with either a leather band or a bracelet. I like the styles of "older" looking watches as well.

    Price range is between $300-$600.

Longines is good. You could find a Tudor for a little more. I don't particularly like them but the solar powered Citizen is a good watch for that price although not currently collectible. Bulova is decent in that range. Lower end is Invicta which is a good watch, heavy and well built. I have used them as dive watches as losing it doesn't break your heart. They will take a lot of abuse. Not collectible either. You can buy a lot of bought out older Swiss watches in that range that are good watches that are minimally collectible.

Might be a dumb question but, what do you mean by bought out older Swiss watches?

What style of watch do you like? I prefer chronograph with a big face myself. Also what type of band? I don't like the feel of a leather band when I sweat so all of my watches are a metal band. Take a look at the ESQ beacon. This watch looks good in a suit and it's sporty enough to wear casual as well. ESQ is made by Movado an you can find this watch for around 500-600 dollars.

Go with a Casio. They usually run about 14.99 at Walmart and you will have enough money left from your budget to goto a cowboys game; )

I can't bring myself to wear anything but Bulova Accutrons. That's super old school though. They hum some, and require a battery change every year. But keeping time with electrified tuning forks is cool, man!

Not a dumb question at all. I should have been more descriptive. There are many older Swiss watch companies that have been bought out or just out of business. Those older Swiss movements work well and they are nice watches.

The only problem with them is not everyone will work on them. You just have to know someone who can clean and service them or they can send it off.

Many good watch makers out there...

That price range should yield you a nice Swiss made Movado...

You can have a look at ebay and put in automatic watch then price range. There are other qualifiers to list. I would not buy a watch from an Asian seller because many are fakes/copies and CHEAPLY made. That will give you an idea what you may like. Then there are watch forums where you can purchase a good GENUINE watch if that's your thing.

Here is the watch I bought one of my sons:

    http://www.amazon.com/Citizen-BJ700...=1349535570&sr=8-4&keywords=citizen eco drive

It was a replacement for the first one I bought him which was stolen. No problems, no batteries, and likely no service needed for many years. Not my thing but he likes it.
