I've heard in the last hour that the early QB rush rumors have legs and Dallas is fielding calls from teams wanting to fill their quarterback need.

The Minnesota Vikings are a team connected with the 9th pick.

From a value standpoint, this would make a lot of sense for Dallas. They could avoid a top-10 signing bonus, which would be hefty if the 2010 rules remain in place. At the same time, the Cowboys would only drop three spots to 12th and still be in the mix for most, if not all the top OT and DE prospects likely to be atop their short list.

The prize for dropping from 9 to 12 is a mid-3rd. If the Vikings and Cowboys went strictly off the points chart, they would swap this way:

    Dallas to Minnesota -- the 9th overall and its 5th round pick;
Minnesota to Dallas -- the 12th overall and its 3rd round pick.

Think of it this way -- Dallas' 5th round pick appreciates about 70 spots, giving the team two high 3rd rounders.

That's if the deal goes down. Who knows what other offers are being shopped before the Valley Ranch brass?

I like that deal a lot more than the one with New England.

If Dallas is moving down, #12 is about as far as I go.

I'd prefer moving down only 3 spots and pick up a 3rd than moving past 17 and getting a late 2nd.

We could still have our choice of Watt, Smith, Castonzo or Jordan at #12.

    Definitely.

We should still be able to land a blue chip prospect, esp if the QBs go early.

Yeah, I don't think you can go much further down and still get a blue chipper in this draft. I am still holding out hope for Peterson.

I would take that. You can possibly still get Smith too. It's Detroit that I think will snatch Smith up. The Redskins are a possibility too since they will be leapfrogged for a QB.

That's a deal I'd take. Having two thirds would give the team the pieces needed to trade up in the second without sacrificing the depth of the draft class.

Yep, this is the kind of trade down I've wanted from the start: Trade down just a little and add a third.

I was just thinking the same thing. I could live with this one. Just the fact that the other one involves New England has me jumpy.

When teams trade up for QBs they pay a premium. A 3rd would not be enough for the Cowboys.

That sounds like the perfect trade down option for us if we can't trade up for Peterson. Plus the Vikes have a nice 3rd rounder but only if no tackles have gone off the board at 9 so we have a better shot at getting either Smith or Castonzo.

    Target?

    Watkins?

    12 - Tyron
    34 - Watkins
    3rd - Bruce Carter
    3rd - Jonny Patrick

That would be the absolute ideal scenario

Right, it makes no sense to trade down outside of the range of your top tier prospects just to add picks. A small trade gives you the opportunity to take top rated player and gives you the pieces needed to trade up later, if given the opportunity.

I tried to throw Edmund Gates in there but I had to be fair and use the 4th to move up for Watkins.... Gates may even be a late 2nd anyway.

But I love the idea of Watkins. I will take a 7 year career from my early 2nd round pick

Uh yeah, this would be fantastic....

IF Minnisota had a 3rd round pick to trade.

They already gave it to the Patriots.
