I've heard this debated allot over the years. The biggest example I think was the GB vs. Den. super bowl when it didn't work for the Packers.(If memory is right) Earlier this year it worked against the Cowboys in the Detroit game. I'm not saying they let the Cowboys score on purpose but teams do let it happen and the results were the same as if they did. I don't remember the game but there was at least one this year win the Cowboys should have let a team score sooner than they did to preserve time.

This is a good article that makes a good case for when to let a team score.

I was seriously thinking the Cowboys should just let the Bears score when they had the ball with fourish minutes left in the first half.

The cowboys used this strategy to perfection during the last 60 minutes of the Bears game.
