Who do you think the Cowboys should play at the SLB spot? I'd just let Connor, Sims, Albright and Wilber fight it out in Camp. You can probably get a good starter, plus depth between those four. Just my opinion.

I'm guessing Sims. Kiffin has preferred speed at the SAM over his career with guys like Shelton Quarles, Cato June and Ian Gold playing there.

If he stays. Wouldn't you say there is a 50-50 chance?

I think Connor will be a cap casualty. I don't believe Sims is the answer with his history of concussions and I don't know that Albright and company are the answer either. I would say that it is a good bet that our 2013 SLB isn't on the roster as of yet.

Nobody really wanted him last year until we took him in the middle of the season.

Kiffin seems to like speedy veterans at the SAM. IIRC, June and Gold played in the Cover 2/Tampa 2 MIKE spots before coming into Tampa and playing the SAM. So, I wouldn't be surprised if we took a MLB playing in a 4-3 that goes into FA.

why not spencer? he is on that side anyway. I know responsibilities are different between a 3-4 SOLB and 4-3. but he did drop into coverage quite a bit, but also has the ability to rush from that side. perhaps he even benefits more, by have a DE and DT on his side and allow him to get more free lanes to the QB.

In truth, linebacker is the least of the Cowboys' worries. Kiffin's defense has two requirements for the linebacker position:

    1) Middle linebacker who can cover the deep middle. Sean Lee. Check.

    2) Playmaking weak side linebacker. Bruce Carter. Check.

The strong side linebacker is generally the least athletically gifted of the three. The Cowboys have a number of candidates to fill that role as well as some decent depth.

Simple free agent pickup. I'm hoping Geno Hayes

I think Albright will win the job... He's athletic and shows good awareness.

Garrett: "(Kyle) Wilber, our linebacker, could easily be a Sam linebacker in the 4-3. "

He'll at least get a shot there, not sure if he'll get the job though.

Anybody except Connor. His 2013 base salary is 3M and he is the slowest of the bunch.

I don't think Albright or Wilber are athletic enough for the position.
I think Sims, but it's likely to be a either a draft pick or a free agent pickup.

Mentioning any players that don't have the ability to cover from the hash marks to the sideline is simply folly.

Here are some measureables that I put together in 2012:

    Notice Albright's 20s (short shuttle), 3-cone and 10-yard times.

    Notice Wilber's 20-yard time.

Wilber and Albright were both coming off leg injuries when they participated in these pre-draft workouts.

Carter didn't participate in pre-draft workouts due to his knee injury.

If you remember the Steeler game, Albright did a good job covering Chris Rainey in the flat.

Geno has plenty of speed and tackles very well.
