Rehired by jerry as director of advance scouting.

Lmao, only in dallas does epic failure get rewarded
he was out of postion , scout might be better ie his background is breaking down film and using analytics etc.. he should never have been a ST coach..hes ok as part of a scout staff..If MM didnt want it he could reject it its not like KO was special and jerry is in luv with him.. so the tenner of the post is just out of line..IMO

He was our special teams coach the last two years. I don't think they are "rewarding" him though as much as hiring him for a job he did well before making the jump to coaching. I have a lot of complaints about Jerry, but given how cut throat this business is it's not the worst quality in the world to have loyalty to folks that have stuck with you over the years. Yeah it gets him into trouble sometimes, but at least players and coaches know that he cares about people and just about money.

we dunno what O' Quinn's credentials and qualifications as a personnel scouting director. In fact that could even be a Wil McClay recommendation to keep him on.
Scouting and coaching is two different areas and fields .

Just because he's not a special teams coach doesn't mean he's a bad scout. He was a pro scout for us from 2006-08 before being hired as director of pro personnel for Cleveland in 2009. He lost his job there in 2010 when Holmgren took over as team president and Tom Heckert as GM.

Not sure what the "advance scouting" role is.

He failed as the ST's coordinator, not as a scout.
I seen many people promoted but could not perform their jobs. And it cost a program much time and cost, and set them back. Though that is far different from the NFL.

O'Quinn has been around a long time and did a good job, he worked his way up. And I thought he deserved the chance to be a coach at the time they promoted him. It did not work. But it doesn't mean he can't go back to doing what he was good at. Unlike the corporate world, where they will not admit it often, then scramble to cover up their mistakes. Like hiring someone else, but yet the incompetent person still be around doing "other" assigned duties at a high pay.

Yeah but he was on the scout team before right? He essentially got demoted back to where he belonged. Hardly consider that a reward.

He was in the scouting department, then became an offensive assistant and quality control. Also was an assistant ST's coach I believe. He paid his dues and worked his way up over the years. So he had a career of progression to get to be the ST's coordinator. Can't fault Jerry or Jason or anyone for that. It just didn't work for various reasons.

When someone is bad at one job doesn't necessarily mean they won't succeed at another.

He did the worst position coaching job of any Dallas coach in recent memory. He should have been fired at midseason.

But that said, people recognized the Peter Principle decades ago that people get promoted up to the level of their incompetence. It doesn't mean he sucks at scouting, even if he sucked as ST coach. Wade Phillips is a great DC who failed miserably at the next step up, its true for most people at some level.

I would prefer that he cares about success.

There isn't room in competitive sports for decisions based on loyalty, friendship, or any other emotional bond.

Will this decision increase the Cowboys probability of success? Was he the best available candidate for the job?

And what the heck is "advanced scouting"? Will be be attending Pee Wee football games in local neighborhoods?

To my understanding, the advanced scouting is the team that goes and scouts the next week’s opponent.
