To my understanding, the advanced scouting is the team that goes and scouts the next week’s opponent.

That's certainly what it would seem to indicate. I can't say I know if O'Quinn is good at that, but I'm sure how McCarthy will use him. If I remember correctly, O'Quinn was given this role before McCarthy was hired, so McCarthy may have his own people whom he trusts to actually handle the role while O'Quinn wears the title but is given other responsibilities.

I don't see any reason to believe that O'Quinn isn't a hardworker or that he is a malcontent (in fact, it seems that the Joneses at least think highly of him), so McCarthy can likely find some role for him.

What did he do wrong? I seriously don't know much about him.

You just dont recognize the name. He was responsible for the worst special teams unit weve had to endure in my lifetime.

Of course he may be a good scout. That I dont know.

Coached our league wide worst specials teams to a season of disastrous crapola, one failure after another, week in week out
You mean you didn’t like being on the edge of seat every time Maher was attempting a field goal, lol.

He has a long history as a very solid scout. That's what got him the opportunity to be ST coach. They're simply putting back where he excelled.

Simple as that.

Yeah but he was on the scout team before right? He essentially got demoted back to where he belonged. Hardly consider that a reward.

Veterans are valuable to any organization as part of the foundation, and if I failed at a position, but the company valued me enough to offer me another position, I’d take it. He might make less, but he’ll still make a better living than most everyone on this forum doing what he loves, WITHOUT moving or starting over.

Just because he's not a special teams coach doesn't mean he's a bad scout. He was a pro scout for us from 2006-08 before being hired as director of pro personnel for Cleveland in 2009. He lost his job there in 2010 when Holmgren took over as team president and Tom Heckert as GM.

Not sure what the "advance scouting" role is.
I would call BS on that..why would he change in what he is looking for as a scout...than a special teams coach? He is still picking the team...

He may have an eye for talent but when it comes to coaching he is on Saturn, third ring out.

Try DECADE. He was a scout prior for Dallas before they advanced him to ST coach. Now they put him back to where he was after 10 years of lousy ST's. What gives by not getting rid of this hemroid?!

He didn't have an eye for talent when he was hired by Dallas as a scout years prior.

That's not the capacity he was hired back in though. His roots are in player personnel, and that's what he is now being hired to do.

Not sure I understand what you are saying.

Are you saying if someone is a poor coach that also automatically means they are a poor scout? Does that also mean if he's a good scout then he would automatically be a good coach?

The ability to recognize talent does not mean one has the ability to utilize it.

I would prefer that he cares about success.

There isn't room in competitive sports for decisions based on loyalty, friendship, or any other emotional bond.

Will this decision increase the Cowboys probability of success? Was he the best available candidate for the job?

And what the heck is "advanced scouting"? Will be be attending Pee Wee football games in local neighborhoods?

Every week the advance scout compiles the upcoming opponent's last several games.

he was out of postion , scout might be better ie his background is breaking down film and using analytics etc.. he should never have been a ST coach..hes ok as part of a scout staff..If MM didnt want it he could reject it its not like KO was special and jerry is in luv with him.. so the tenner of the post is just out of line..IMO

Scout to coach to scout again.

What a clown team.
