As it goes with sizable football contracts, the best aspects of big broadcasting deals make the first headlines. The less impressive details emerge later. In the case of Tony Romo's new contract with CBS, the initial impression created by the first wave of reports was that the network had made a long-term investment in Romo [more]

My guess is CBS is confident about retaining its NFL telecast rights; otherwise, they wouldn’t have signed Romo to that deal. And the fact that they have Tony locked in is insurance that CBS will keep their NFL deal.

Meanwhile, after the long-term $17mil-per Romo contract has now set the new benchmark, whaddya think ESPN might be willing to pony up for the holy grail of potential color men — Peyton Manning?

And this really means what? If CBS decided not to retain NFL football they have an out with Romo and his deal, so after a couple/three years of making 17m per season Romo would again be a FA able to sign with anybody, how is that a bad thing for Romo? CBS was just covering all their bases in the unlikely event the upper brass decides it doesn't want NFL football anymore, never happen

If CBS doesn't get NFL games they don't need Tony to announce them, but the station that does will. Obvious stipulation for both sides.

Awesome. Hope Romo does all our games. Lol. Now that JG isn’t there it won’t be so predictable.

What a pointless article. When has CBS ever been at a threat of losing NFL games. Trying to stir up controversy where there is none.

Romo could well be the next Keith jackson. It would be idiotic for CBS to get rid of him. He is capable of more than football broadcasts.

The excitable teenage girl act doesn’t work so well when covering golf.

There is probably a clause in the contract where Tony will get paid a certain amount if the TV contract does not go through. As he could have signed with another network in the meantime. I don't think anyone would sign a deal, then not get paid waiting around for the TV deal. It is not like he needs the money, but still I can't see that happening.

What does this mean..
It means the same thing it meant for years WAAAAY before Romo was doing TV. Every one that works for a TV station that covers the NFL are subject to the terms of the stations contract with the NFL. They cant cover the NFL for that station if the NFL doesnt have a contract with said station. Just common sense to be honest.
