Poe has had kind of a strange career trajectory. He showed alot of promise as an inside rusher early in his career and it propelled him to two Pro Bowl births. However, his last two years in KC he was used primarily as a traditional two gap NT and minimized him as a pass rusher.

After leaving KC, he had meager production as a rusher in Atlanta and in his first year in Carolina. However last season, he tallied 4 sacks in 402 snaps. Im not sure what his advanced stats look like, but thats very good production for a defensive tackle. Particularly a 1T/NT.

The question is, is that an anomaly. Or did Poe get back into a groove as a rusher

DT are supposed to take blocks to allow LBs and DEs to get free. Sacks for them are rare.

Poe has never been a traditional 2 gap run defender. Not when he started, not now. Tends to take on combo blocks these days as everyone runs zone. Voch has good film on him.

He's a 350 lb NT. Why are we using sacks as a standard of evaluation?

Poe has been largely a large-bodied, space-eating run stuffer. Sacks are not the only thing from a DT. We need a big guy to eat space and free the other 3 lineman to get 1-on-1 blocking assignments and make things easier for them. Something Garrett/Marinelli have largely avoided. Glad McCarthy and Nolan are taking the IDL seriously. Poe and McCoy are obviously not young, so we should still address DT in the draft. Let them learn and groom them to take over. I've always strongly believed this is what we've always been missing and has been holding our D from taking that next jump.

Also, both KC and ATL (not sure about CAR) used him as a gadget player on offense for trick plays, usually in goal line/short yardage scenarios. Would love some of that here. Mainly as a large lead blocker, but occasionally as a pass catcher or even thrower. Gotta spice it up.

If they can collapse the pocket they are helping the pass rush even if they don't get sacks themselves.
Collapsing the pocket is still pressure. I think some of the other posters in this thread are confusing run down and pass down responsibilities of a DT

Poe was used as a pressure player early in his career. By his third year he was considered one of the better young DT's in football. After that KC just basically parked him as a strickly 2 gap NT. Last year its seems he may have been used more as a pass rushing DT
