Would buy us some time to find a decent center in the draft....instead of forcing a pick on a corner.

What's the big concern with center? I don't get it.

So Travis Frederick retired unexpectedly. It happens. In the history of the Cowboys, only two players have been drafted in the 1st round specifically to play the center position. Ironically, both retired prematurely due to illness/injury.

Dallas will find an adequate talent to fill in for Frederick. No need to waste a high draft pick on a center when there are greater options available at 17.

I wonder which teammate he was trying to thank.

Are we interested? I SAY YES.

This a guy who's got 8 season in and for his first 3 season couldn't beat out an aged Terrence Newman or Pacman Jones. Finally in his 4th season after Newman left for the vikings, he gets a starting job, but then has injury problems every season and in those 8 seasons has yet to play a 16 game season. Even though He played in games since his rookie season he has only 10 picks for those 8 years. The Cowboys already have younger corners that can do what he has done. This is just another case of someone hears a name that is free and plays scout but doesn't do it very well.

Sure why not? Quality player. Longtime starter.

4 years is a long time? 8 years in and just 10 picks and he couldn't beat out an old man Terrence Newman his first 3 years. Has injury history and has never played 16 games in any season.

Didnt they sqeak several nice seasons out of a completely cooked Terrence Newman when he left Dallas?

Does that work in reverse somehow? Are we owed something by the universe?

I would tend to think the team needs to add a vet corner.....I also expect Al Harris to inject life into that bunch btw, fwiw.
Zimmer got 3 years out of him with the bengals and then 3 more when they went to the vikings.

  • If they do sign a vet to a team friendly deal for depth. I would rather have Beshaud Breeland, Tramon Williams or Jonathan Joseph.

I say finish out the secondary in the draft. McKinney in 1st Rd, Jeff Gladney in 2nd round. Would be nice to add a DE in FA, but I don’t think we’ll sign another CB.

in the age of free agency, its hard to develop THEN KEEP A YOUNG GUY. Why develop a guy only to have them leave ? I see your point..and its a good one. But there has to be a middle ground. A MIX. We need to find that sweet spot like the Chiefs, Seattle, Ravens,Patriots, Titans etc.

Depends how teams can.. or decide how they want to manage their cap ...and how much they value that player to want to keep them as a core player.
..and if that player himself wants to commit to that particular team.

For instance, we could have kept Byron Jones... the myth and misunderstanding that still to this day persist among Cowboys fans, is that we could not have
kept Byron and still pay Cooper, and Dak's long term contract demands, even with franchise tag, the Cowboys still money above the cap number and they
can always restructure and move money around to sign the more significant core players they really want to keep.
They could have even kept Robert Quinn, if they really wanted to.. but they had a set price for certain players.
Apparently he was one of those they think they can manage to redirect themselves to younger, long term players.

and if you are gonna get a Middle- ground player, make sure it's an impact middle ground player. Stephen Gilmore is a impact/middle ground player
Dre Kirkpatrick is Not a Middle ground player. He's an average- stop gap player. Those are Brandon Carr like deals that dont help get you over the hump.

Man if he took a team friendly deal I would pull the trigger... I think he’s an “average” corner who will give us similar production to Byron at way cheaper price point

oh and maybe snags a few more INTs

I believe that we are mostly done in free agency and will not sign another CB. As Byron Jones said in an interview, DAL FO let him go not because he cost too much but because FO (and Byron) believe they have enough talented CBs. DAL likes the trio of Awuzie, Brown and Lewis. Added Goodwin and Canaday as depth and ST. And FO will draft at CB in round 1-3, and maybe another late. That will be 6-7 CBs. For better or worse, there is no room in FO’s mind for a guy like Dre, Logan Ryan, Aqib Talib, etc.

Honestly I think that was just him taking the high road. The Dallas CBs are not very good. The secondary is the weakness of the team and is a giant red flag in terms of stopping their chances for success going forward.

That is longer than the average NFL career.

Yes it is but then those that actually follow the sport know that the average is just that and it's padded by backup players and practice squad players that don't amount to anything and get cut and never picked up again or players that sustain an injury and are never the same or were just borderline to start out with. Now look at the career length of the players who start and see how many of them play longer than 4 years. The 3.5 year average is the number the NFLPA keeps putting out to help the players cash in because of the short careers, but that average also depends on position. Another thing is stats on average NFL careers put out by the league is longer depending on several things. Those that make the active/inactive roster as rookies have a 67 year average. Those that least three pension seasons have an average of 7.1 years. The average career length for a first-round draft pick is 9.3 years and the average career length for a player who is selected for or plays in at least one Pro Bowl is 11.7 year. Now these numbers are from 2011 but they have gone up not down since then.
