Cowboys Draft: Will 2020 Be A 2013 Rerun?
by
Kevin Brady

It’s April 2013. The Dallas Cowboys’ 18th overall first round selection is coming up. On the clock are presumed studs like LSU safety Eric Reid, Oregon guard Kyle Long, and Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert.

Instead, the Cowboys decide to trade back to the end of the first round, allowing the 49ers to come up to grade Reid while gaining a third round pick that would become Terrance Williams. Later on in the night the Cowboys finally pick, taking lesser known Wisconsin center Travis Frederick.

The fanbase was confused, but years later no one would argue that Dallas made a mistake on draft night.

Now it’s April 2020 and the Cowboys are in a similar spot.

......

Still, trading back and allowing themselves to dip into both the back-half of a strong wide receiver class as well as add defensive talent at the end of round one might be the best course of action for the Dallas Cowboys.

They traded back cause the scouts loved Floyd, but Rod didn't want him.
That and the alternative was Reid at 18, whom they liked but didnt rate that highly.

Stephan said after the fact something to the effect of " We like Reid alot, but 18 was a little rich"

I think Reid was the "gun to their head" pick at 18 that year.

You wait to see who is available at 17 but trading back this year seems to play into the strengths of the draft and the needs of the team. You can still get a similarly rated player and get an extra pick right in the heart of the value in this draft. I'd even argue trading back twice might prove to be very worth it.

I think it will be interesting because the old staff is no longer here and I do think McCarthy and staff will have some input along with McCray. Comparing anything they did in past season to this season I think is meaningless. Given early statements made by McCarthy:

Mike McCarthy gets it: Parts of the Dallas Cowboys' league-leading offense already work.

If it ain’t broke, no need to completely fix the scheme that raced to 431.5 yards per game and 27.1 points (sixth-most) under first-year offensive coordinator Kellen Moore in 2019.

So the longtime Green Bay Packers coach plans to upgrade components of Dallas’ offense, but keep parts — including Moore, the only member of the 2019 staff to maintain his position — the same.

Forget that on defense.

“The defensive system is going to change,” McCarthy said last week in a sitdown with local beat writers. “The terminology, there is going to be a big change there.”

One rumor around the Vikings was that Patterson was the Cowboys target at #31 until the Vikings traded up to steal him from them.

I researched it in the past and found a few links that backed that up, but none official sources of course.

But the argument was that the Cowboys just hired Derek Dooley and he was the Tenn coach where Patterson was at.

I wasnt here in 2013, but I remember the build up to that draft on my old board. Posters were so passionately adamant that we trade down for picks. There was enough emotion and passion behind that, I could have bottled it up and powered a rocket ship to Neptune. Didnt have enough jars though.

Then they are all pissed because they thought we didnt get enough when we did trade. And that was before "reached" for Frederick lol

I believe they will trade back if the DE from LSU (Chaisson), or Henderson (CB), are gone. I can still see them going for the kid/DE from Penn State if they do trade back. I do not see them going for center (Ruiz) at all.

Only problem: Every other team sees a great opportunity to trade back and pick up value. It will be interesting to see what happens with the first ten picks, it could get crazy.

how the heck is drafting one of the best centers to ever play for the cowboys and getting a starting reciever out of the deal a mistake? It looks like it worked out pretty well and frederick was on pace to be a HOF'er until a little known disease cut his career short.

who writes this garbage.

At the time almost no one liked the move and many called Frederick a reach. I think that's what he is referring to.

What’s with the font o_O
Sorry. I'm doing 'cut and paste' through my phone from the original website. On my phone, the font looks slightly larger but not by much. Whereas, on a computer screen, I assume the font will look much bigger. Apologies for that. If any mod can help and lessen the size of the opening post's font, it would be greatly appreciated.

LOL.

They panicked, got beat in the trade down, and messed up drafting Terrance Williams over Keenan Allen.

The only reason people try to pretend the Cowboys won is because Frederick turned out to be a stud. It's not like they knew Frederick was going to be the pick so far down the round. Stephen even admitted there were no more players left with a 1st round grade so they took Frederick and that they heard "Detroit really wanted him"

You can always tell when the Cowboys make a controversial or criticized pick because they immediately try to justify it. With Jaylon Smith it was "New England was about to draft him".

That's exactly what I was thinking.

"The fanbase was confused, but years later no one would argue that Dallas made a mistake on draft night."

Really? Because other than the Frederick pick, the Cowboys screwed the rest of the draft up pretty badly.

Anyone remember Gavin frickin' Escobar? The TE that this team drafted over Travis Kelce?

Or the fact that they took that goof Terrance Williams over Keenan Allen or Adam Theilen?

B.W. Webb?

The underwear thief and future felon Joseph Randle?

Other than the Frederick move, that draft was a disaster and one that should be avoided, not emulated.

No matter what the Cowboys say, there are certain positions they do not value in the draft. When the chips are down they will not take a Safety or DT in the first round. This is why I think they have started this crap about Kinlaw having bad knees. They are worried he drops to them and they are not going to take him because he plays a position that is not worth a rich pick at 17. I am actually shocked they drafted Martin and Frederick in the first round because I don't think they valued interior offensive line that much either.

The Cowboys are going to target Chaisson. Jerry dreams about him in the shower. He plays DE, a position Jerry loves to draft. If its not Chaisson, it will be a CB or, god forbid, Murray at LB. I hope McCarthy can influence Jerry but I want to see if before I believe otherwise.

I could be wrong, because the Cowboys have changed their thinking on DTs, but I have a bad feeling from watching Jones draft for the past 30 years.

Come on, Stash. Terrance Williams was actually pretty good as a #2 for a while. He made a lot of big catches, TDs and long runs-after-the-catch during his time as a Cowboy. It's when he injured his foot at the end of 2017 that he went downhill quickly.

He was a bum. A limited bonehead, on and off the field, made by Tony Romo.

Such a bum in fact that his career is already over and he couldn't cut it in the XFL. Once the new quarterback came into the picture, his numbers dropped off of a cliff and he was exposed for the fraud that he truly was. Followed by the fact that he hit free agency and came crawling back to this team when nobody else wanted him. Only to flame out as spectacularly as any player in recent memory.

Have you so quickly forgotten?

The videos I provided prove differently. T-Will was no bum or only made by Romo. He was a decent #2 WR. Bums are our current backup WRs. WHEN Amari's plantar fasciitis acts up again and limits his ability to play, we will truly see the real bums on this WR crew (aside from Gallup who is no more than a #2 as T-Will was).
