Its a rolling bank account, kind of like Smiths contract, but to a lesser degree.
Makes no sense to cut or restructure, unless we need the money to sign another FA.

How does it 'make no sense' to cut an overpriced backup?

Don’t think they are much in a hurry to do anything with Crawford. Why - they aren’t signing Griffin or Clowney. My best guess in they see what the NFL does with Smith and Gregory before any decision is made. I know Dallas values his leadership but coming off double hip surgery he might not me good enough to make the team.
Cutting Crawford doesn’t close to paying clowney one season and don’t see him signing for one year

We know this needs to happen but Dallas has to pick right time for it. Did they do enough in draft to make that call to Crawford? Gregory & Smith are still unknowns but Dallas did sign two DT in FA then added two more DL in draft. I think Dallas is close to having enough leverage to ask Crawford to cut his salary in half. Then Dallas has about $14 million to make run at Griffen?
He WANTS to restructure.
DAL had no reason to do so before letting this draft play out.
They like Crawford but definitely aren't committed to him.
I think we will see over the next week what they truly think of Crawford and how they wanna deal with his contract.
He tweeted a couple weeks ago he was hungrier than ever.
That didn't come from out of thin air, he knows his situation is tenuous and he needs to get on a field and prove he can still play and stay healthy.

He might not have a choice.
I suspect someone pays clowney
He manages to convince teams he’s a great pass rusher
Most fans probably didn’t know he’s never had double digit sacks

I could totally see that but I do expect Aldon Smith and Gregory to be reinstated and start at that position. Dorance Armstrong or Anae could potentially surprise also but you are right that at his moment Crawford would start.

I just don't think they need him badly enough to overpay him by something like 5 Milllion dollars. Even Sean Lee took a paycut last year.

Im probably overly optimistic, but I think we will get good production out of Aldon Smith and Gregory. Smith is beast, with little milage and appears to have his head on straight. Should be fun to watch.

Close? Was last year not enough for you to see the obvious? Half? Crawford should consider himself lucky to get vet min. Cut his sorry rear end right now.
I hate Goodell with a passion, but I would give him a fist bump if he suspended Crawford for the whole year for his drunken haymakers last year.

I don't think he's getting a big long term deal at this point. He's going to get a one year, prove it deal, probably for a decent one year pay day - maybe like $16MM or so?

He's going to be 31 when the season starts. He hasn't played in 4 years.

I am not sure why people are enthusiastic about him being able to play really well. I view him as basic a total shot in the dark that maybe we can get something out of. I feel like some think they are getting a close version of the Smith from 2011-2013.

He's not 31 in NFL years. His body may be more responsive than someone who had an additional 3500 snaps. It may not be as well. I view it as a shot in the dark, but the potential is there and Im optimistic.

Crawford lovers are like the official security blanket of the Garrett/Rod regime. They just can’t let go of the facts for blind optimism. When they go you quickly realize how much better things are without them and wonder why it took so long to move on. His salary is nowhere close to his production. An 8M cap savings can add a lot better options on the d line.

All indications are Clowney returns to SEA.
He would have left for big money but that didn't happen.
SEA treated him like DAL often does making an initial offer then when that gets refused says go get best offer and we'd love chance to match.

The "not 31 in NFL years" is offset by the fact he's not been in football shape and playing in the NFL for four seasons.

How many 31 year olds have come back and been successful after 4 years off? None. Because it's not easy.

The Cowboys are taking a risk IMO holding onto hope Smith and Gregory solve the RDE problem. Crawford is not a RDE and offers not much upside in the pass rush category.

The solution is out there IMO but I think they are overvaluing what they have and the cost associated.

I agree. It's been well stated that he was somehow, incredibly, looking for $20 million a year. And that crazy talk is exactly why he's still available. At this point, he has to salvage any market he can get and will still have the crazy idea in his head that he's somehow worth $20 million a year. So he'll take a one-year deal to try to show that he's worth it. He won't succeed, but he'll try.

Well said.

The funny thing is that on the day he's no longer a Cowboy, those same people will immediate jump over to the other side of the argument. You can set your watch to it.

Marginal production coming off hip surgeries with an 8M cap figure. How can anyone think that is a bargain?

Fan blinders.

For some people, loyalty to their favorite team trumps all, even rational thought and admitting the obvious. They feel compelled to make excuses for each and every dumb move their favorite team makes.

Even today, some Eagles fans are actively trying to tell themselves that drafting Hurts in round 2 this year was a good move for their team.

The lies people tell themselves.

1. Are there any "Crawford lovers" at CZ?
2. The Cowboys have no experienced players to replace him that are not currently suspended.
3. The run defense appeared to miss Crawford in 2019.

If they can sign a better DE for 8M I'm in favor of it; however, it seems unlikely.
