The Dallas Cowboys have drawn a line with their quarterback. After giving Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper big contracts in the last two offseasons, the Cowboys don’t appear willing to budge on Dak Prescott’s offer and the stalemate that’s ensued may force Dallas to go so far as to rescind the franchise tag on him.

The top of the quarterback market is Russell Wilson, at $35 million per year, followed by Ben Roethlisberger ($34 million), Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff ($32.5 million) and Carson Wentz ($32 million). According to reports, back-to back offers to Dak Prescott over the last several months were for $33 million per year, with potential differences in guaranteed money and the structure of those guarantees. A new offer to Prescott back in March was reported to “nudge” toward $34 million a year.

The Cowboys bought time with Prescott the only way they could: by placing the exclusive franchise tag on him. That tag would pay him $31.5 million this year, thanks to Roethlisberger restructuring his contract to move money around, which is below the sure-fire starting point on a multi-year deal. Prescott, for his part, has not signed the tag and is therefore not under contract. So he’s within his rights to skip the Cowboys’ virtual offseason program as he intends to do.

The two sides now have until July 15 to get a multi-year deal done...

...It’s rare for a team to rescind a franchise tag. Back in 2016, the Carolina Panthers put the franchise tag on cornerback Josh Norman. When talks on a long-term deal went absolutely nowhere they rescinded the tag on April 20, the week before that year’s draft. He immediately became an unrestricted free agent and signed with the Washington Commanders. Doing so with a quarterback would be unprecedented and Prescott would hit the open market immediately.

The Cowboys would surely like to have Prescott in the (virtual) building to work with new head coach Mike McCarthy this spring and this stare down will likely only end if the team blinks.

If Prescott continues to exercise his leverage, and he should, he may push the Cowboys to consider every possible option before too long. Those options include rescinding the franchise tag, as unlikely as it seems...

Cowboys' Dak Prescott: Contract length at issue
Rotowire 1D ago
The Cowboys' latest contract offer to Prescott would reportedly make him the highest-paid player in the NFL, but the two sides have so far been unable to agree on the length of the deal, per Clarence Hill Jr. of the Star-Telegram.

The parameters currently being discussed would match the $35 million a season Russell Wilson is making. However, while the Cowboys want the contract to run for at least five years to give them more roster stability and spread out the salary cap hit, Prescott's camp is asking for a four-year deal, presumably on the assumption the market for his services is only going to become more favorable. With a July 15 deadline to get the QB under contract inching closer, expect the impasse to be broken sooner or later, although Jerry Jones has made a career out of waiting until the last minute to really ramp up negotiations. Until an agreement is reached, though, Prescott is choosing not to participate in the team's virtual offseason program.

When I think of Dak, I think of a guy who walked in as a freshmen and owned the league. Then Garrett and his staff got to him, and the rest was history. For context, let's go back to the Romo years. Remember when Romo would be so HOT, just hot hot hot. They had a ton of talent back then, but as the year materialized, teams would catch on to what the Boys offense was doing, and we'd often fail later on in the year. sounds familiar?

Back then, even though I hated Romo, I did admit if he'd had a better coach, we could possibly do something, but that obviously never happened. By the way, he also had the services of 3 coaches. Parcells' Wade Phillips & the Clapper. So now let's see what McCarthy has.
I suspect that things may go very well since you're finally dealing with a youngish, super bowl winning coach that knows how to coach QBs and offenses.

I suspect we won't see as many drops, penalties, all things that kill offensive drives. Also, I suspect you won't see the amount of failure on special teams, and lastly, I think you'll see a new approach on defense.

Let's move on from the old regime and into the new. This is a new staff, let's see what these guys do now. It's a clean slate.

Fans here hated Dak since day 1. So his contract won't change their attitude anyways.

I dont have a dog in this fight, but I think a lot of the Dak hate is because of Romo.

He took Romo's job...…………..a large section of the fan base feels Romo should have been allowed to return to the starting lineup.

They will never forgive Dak for that. Now add to that the fact Dak appears to have turned down top 5 money, and he looks greedy.

TEAM PROJECTED TO RECEIVE FOUR PICKS (2021)

DALLAS COWBOYS

Projected compensatory picks: One apiece in Rounds 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Key free-agent losses: Byron Jones (Dolphins), Robert Quinn (Bears), Randall Cobb (Texans), Maliek Collins (Raiders).
Key free-agent additions: Gerald McCoy (Panthers), Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (Bears), Greg Zuerlein (Rams).
Comp-pick analysis: Dallas lost seven total qualifying free agents and gained three, with the additions of McCoy and Clinton-Dix canceling out the losses of Collins and Jason Witten. Dallas will be without a couple of late-round picks next season thanks to trades they've made, but they will add plenty of ammunition, thanks to the four compensatory picks that should be coming their way.

The bottomline now is does he deserve to be the top paid QB in the league.
He is going to get it. Deserves got nothing to do with it. JJ will cave and give him the 4 year deal instead of the longer term. I think the pay is already worked out. They can move the numbers around and we will free up more cap space...

So Aikman had zero flaws (with Dak haters) with career 61.5% completions, 165 td's/141 int's.

Just goes to show you can;t use stats to prove any certain point. Can't use A stat. You have to take the whole picture into consideration.

I think Dak's picture ain't done yet. We'll see.

So no, signing Andy Dalton isn’t about Dak Prescott. It’s about Cooper Rush and the backup spot.

If Dallas wanted to put real heat on Dak then they could’ve gone after Cam Newton or even Jameis Winston. They also could’ve drafted someone higher than the 7th Round of last week’s NFL Draft.

Even if the Cowboys can’t get a long-term contract agreement with Prescott this offseason, the franchise tag should secure his services for 2020. Dallas sees itself as a Super Bowl contender with the arrival of Mike McCarthy and their other offseason business.

Here's what you're missing: Both Zeke and DLaw negotiated and settled on the middle ground.
