Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are at an impasse over nothing

The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott are not far apart on the terms of a new deal.
They apparently haven’t been far for a while now. The market is essentially dictating the price to both parties so the average annual compensation and guaranteed cash are basically spelled out.

So contrary to popular belief, it’s not Dak’s outrageous demands or selfishness or greed that’s holding this up. It’s the length of the deal. Rather than asking for more Dak’s actually asking for less. Try that on for size, Dak haters.

Now before we throw him a parade and add him to the Christmas card list, let’s be clear: this isn’t about sacrifice or altruism. This is good business from Dak Prescott’s camp. A short-term deal may offer less overall dollars, but if Dak continues to perform as he’s been, he stands to make considerably more overall getting to the free agent market again as quickly as possible.

That’s where the two parties are at the impasse.

Dak has on the table, we believe, a $35M APY offer with $106M+ g'teed. With an argument about 4 v 5 years. So, @Boys_Vox 's right – there's no 'disrespect' in that. https://t.co/voVx1G9rFk

Multiple reliable sources have indicated, for quite a while now, the Dallas Cowboys want to sign Dak to a 5-year deal while Dak wants a 4-year deal. Each day that goes by Dak seems to get a little more leverage so it seems wise to explore what that extra year is worth on the market, right?

I fail to see how Dak is gaining leverage especially since the Cowboys now have a proven option backing him up. It seems like neither party is willing to budge. I see Dak likely playing out this year on the tag and then probably going somewhere else next year. I really hope Jerry doesn't cave like he did with Zeke.

the back up is on a one year deal, older, just got cut and has proven he is not capable of winning. he is a game manager at best, now even less at his age. he is not going to lead you to promise land....

He is a 1 year deal Dallas is not going to build around Dalton. The signing of Dalton is not about leverage it is about having an UDFA or a 7th rd rookie being your primary backup which makes no sense.

He’s gaining leverage because Watson and Mahomes will drive up the AAV market for QBs with their deals. So Dak’s in no rush to sign a long term deal until he gets it for 4 years at his AAV number.

I would just as soon see Dallas sign him to the 4 year deal and see where the team is in the next 3 years. If the Cowboys are not competing for a championship in that span move on. Dak likes to say he is betting on himself which is why he wants the 4 year as opposed to 5. I say lets gamble

OK, the solution to this is too easy. Make it a 5-year contract, with the last year voidable by Dak if the Cowboys make the SB (don't even have to win it) during the 4-year period. Bang. Done. Have Dak's agent PM me for my address to send me my commission check. :D

Why not just strike up a 5 year deal with the kicker that the Cowboys can't franchise tag him after it expires?

Cause even if he signed a 4 year deal, they can simply tag him for that 5th year, if they want to.

The Cowboys should take the 4 year deal. In 2 or 3 years they may be happy they did. I am not a Dak hater or one of those fans who thinks we should move on from Dak. Not for Dalton or anyone else who is available. In fact, Dalton may be the best of what was available. But Dak is good enough and I'd rather the Cowboys focus on their defense.

At the same time, I also believe Dak has yet to prove he is an elite franchise QB deserving of the big contract. If he does not prove it in 2020 then I'd say its time to consider moving on from Dak the first chance they get - meaning the first opportunity to draft another QB who can actually play. The Cowboys offense is loaded with weapons. I still think the OL needs some help but overall, its still a good OL. If Dak falters in 2020, the Cowboys will be happy they did not sign hiim to a long term mega-deal.

Ya, I guarantee if this was Aikman or Romo instead of Dak, you would say different.

Little bit of food for thought on this contract guys

There have been 7 contracts handed out this entire offseason that are structured over 5 years...7...for the entire group of free agents

On a big contract it is easier for a team to spread the cost over a longer period. So I get why Dallas wants it to be a longer term deal.

Cmon, if you have any sense, that is just a pipe dream for you that Dak leaves. No way it happens. Dak gains leverage because TC and the season draws near.

Now signing Dalton does make things better for the Cowboys, but if Jerry feels we are capable of doing something special, he knows he needs Dak.

Even if fans like you dont agree.
