I was willing to give Gathers a chance, but year 2 he was history for me, though he was never a pet cat.

I never liked Darius Jackson, and said he was a PS at best right away. But many had him in the HOF starting over Zeke.
Then they jumped on the Bo Scarborough HOF bus, which I never did either. But he showed better flashed than Jackson.

I liked Noah Brown coming out of college. Was very happy when they drafted him. But I think this may be it for him. Unless they want him as a pure blocking WR and are content with his 10 catches.

Noah Brown is not a "pet". I think he was a bit of a reach as he didn't have many college plays. He does have one of the best catches in college football though!

Rico...WAS a pet...no logical rationale for keeping him around that long.

Good call. He was a fan favorite … until he asked for McNabb's (or was it Vick's) jersey after a game, and then it was all down-hill after that.

Vick. For his niece or nephew for Christmas no less, supposedly. That sent everybody yapping and running around in circles.

I've been a fan since 1966. Obviously I'm much older now and my memory doesnt work as well as it once did. But for some strange reason, I can remember every single one of these pet cats. Funny how that works.

What was wrong with Chad Hennings. He was a quality player.

If Ekuban had been a 3rd round pick, fans would have liked him, but he never lived up to 1st round pick status.
I said in my post that Hennings was a good player. I had just envisioned him having the potential to be a true star player - possibly the next great Cowboy DT.

Agreed on Ekuban.

Drew Henson had 9 sports lives, but he never amounted to anything. he was s'posed to be as good as Brady, but nope.

I still blame Henson's lack of development on Parcells. The kid never really got a chance.

The Peoples Choice, Tashard Choice

I remember when he was balling out and it made no sense that Felix and Marion were still getting touches.

yes he did. My dad was golfing buddies with Chad's father and got me an autographed card of him from stanford. He signed it "the next cowboys super bowl champ QB". Damn i need to find that card.

This time of year, its always fun to see how many of our diehard fans break out their pet cat stories. You know, those favorite players that are often at the end of the bench or deep in the depth chart but have captured the heart and imagination of some fans. Sometimes they pan out...often they don’t.

So I thought it would be fun to make a list of some of the most popular “pet cats” around here the last few years and how they turned out- either playing here, elsewhere or not at all.

I will start- Here’s a list of some guys I’ve seen mentioned often by some fans on these fan boards as pet cats, that I never quite understood what the big deal was. In no particular order:
  • Rico Gathers TE- I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a sixth round draft pick with no college football experience on their resume garner so much hype and drool. He was definitely a great athlete. Football player, not so much. He looked great in shorts and preseason games against 3rd string guys who had no shot at making it in the NFL, but if you listened to some, he was headed to the ROH and maybe Canton. Cut in 2018. Somehow his HOF run has ended.
  • Matt Johnson- S- a 4th rounder out of Eastern Washington, he was hailed by some as “the steal of the draft” in 2012. Unfortunately, he pulled every muscle known to science and never could get on the field. But man was he hyped. He somehow lasted on the roster 3 seasons before announcing his retirement in 2015. Good athlete but just couldn’t stay healthy.

  • Charles Tapper- DE- Another 4th rounder in 2016 that had several fans frothing that he was going to bookend our DL with DLaw. Heard him hailed a lot between 2016-17. Again, injuries did him in. Was released here in 2018, landed with the jets but they released him again recently.
This list could go on and on...I’m interested in some fun memories you have of other pet cats that didn’t quite have nine lives.

Who’s on your list?

Randy Moss and i still take it personal that Jerry passed on him. I know this doesnt fit the narrative of the post.

Woody Danztler man this guy was a beast in college, had one spetacular return for Dallas

Can anyone think of a pet cat that’s ever amounted to anything? I want a dog not a cat.

I coached youth football for 17 years.
Once, a kid's dad walked up to me and told me I should put
his son at RB. The boy was 8 and scared to death. He would
fumble all the time in practice.

Anyway, I shared my evaluation with the dad. His response was "I breed running backs"....lol/smh
should've told that kid "I'm putting you in because of your dad, but you need to show him you're not the player I think you are, prove me wrong!"

that very next moment on the field would've either completely killed his future at football or he would turn out to be walter payton.
