From what I read I would say in the know. However, Dallas having interest isn't saying much, considering they need a DE and George Edwards is in the house.

I must say, DAL should be more attractive if the money is equal.

Cowboys have around $14M in cap space left and that's more than enough to get something done with Griffen around say $7M.

I just read on over the cap.com that Dallas only has $5.5 million left in cap room. It doesn't count Travis Frederick post Jun.1 cut. But that is not promising. Oh well.

Yeah Travis and a Dak extension would free up enough, not to mention a pay cut for Crawford. Even though I heard his deal can’t be restructured as this is his last year under contract. Not sure of the validity but thought I’d include.

If that's the case FA is over for the Cowboys.

Jones won’t rule out more additions. As he likes to say, player acquisition takes place 365 days a year.

But given the number of players the Cowboys have already signed, where this team is on the cap and the depleted talent pool in free agency, the bulk of the club’s personnel work is complete.

“I’d say yeah, the heavy lifting is probably done on player acquisition,” Jones said. “There is a chance we add one or two more. It can always happen. But we’re ready to go. Reading this from the Dallas Morning news just deflated my hopes. :(

DL has already been addressed in FA and the draft.

Neither of these guys are going to be worth the effort as 1 year deal guys.

Dallas has to see what they have in whom they have Trystan Hill has to get developed and we drafted guys in the DL and resigning Woods will help.

If we are going to shore up anything, a LBer seems primary. Lee is game to game and Wolf Hunter we have not a clue. We need a LBer who can cover TEs and backs out of the backfield.

We will lose some games because good teams will just attack the LBers as they and the safeties were below average. That will happen again.

If some cut comes our way, we need to jump on it at LBer.

Just my call to arms.

Yeah that number is way off. There are so many things the Cowboys could do if they needed room. There is plenty of room available if the Cowboys wanted to sign Griffen.

But wasn't Dak's big salary supposed to destroy the salary cap?

Who would you rather have at RDE more than Griffen, that's on the roster?

Robert Quinn was very effective on a one year deal, why is this different?

T. Hill isn't worth mentioning... Gallimore has taken his spot. Anae isn't altering any signings.

Cowboys already have a coverage LB, he just needs to be healthy and stay healthy. Also, Joe Thomas can cover.

The coaching/scheme also plays a major part in the coverage of TEs n RBs. This new defense isn't going to be as predictable, supposedly, and I'll take George Edwards or whoever they have now over Bloom.

I get the concern at LB, but the stronger the DL the better the LBs are protected.

Texans went from an elite defense to an average one with the loss of Clowney.

Clowney is an every down game disruptor vs. BOTH the pass and the run.

Without Clowney, the Texans lost their bridge to sustain competency along their defensive front. This led to a horrendous defense. When Crennel’s defense gets pressure, it’s really great. When it doesn’t, it’s really bad, and it was even worse when the cornerback group talent was as thin and injured as it was last season. Without Clowney, Watt, and Kareem Jackson, the Texans didn’t create the same negative plays in the run game they did in 2019.

The stats speak for themselves. The results are clear. Houston’s defense was worse last season without Clowney. Their all-time great run defense dropped from first to 22nd in defensive DVOA. Their pass defense DVOA dropped from 19th to 26th. They were last in the league in yards per attempt against the short pass. Their pressure rate dropped from 20th to 26th. Their adjusted sack rate from 13th to 29th. Tremendous fell to below average. Passable fell to among the worst in the league.

The difference between then and 2019 was the Texans had Clowney. Clowney could carry a front seven and decimate offenses by being football spectacular, not box score spectacular.

The reason I think the Cowboys aren't going hard after Griffen or Clowney is that this is not Rod's defense and, in the base, they want Lawrence on one side and an SLB/DPR on the other with three big dudes in between.
In standard nickel, one of the big toads is rotated out and the SLB/DPR becomes a stand-up RDE.
I think if Gregory and Smith and reinstated they imagine those two competing with Anae, Gifford, and Jelks for the SLB/DPR spot. I think Gregory/Anae are probably the early front runners with Smith (at a cut 290) probably playing inside, competing for Crawford's role.
My guess is that if Gregory is not reinstated for week 1, the Cowboys will make a push for Clay Matthews or Golden from the Giants, as they have played that SLB/DPR role in the past.

Right but Crawford can play several different positions along the DL

The Joneses value the idea of being below average in a versatile type of way.

I think they have a very specific role for Crawford. LDE in the base and then inside pass rusher in the nickel. I think he will be good at it. 9 million/year good? Probably not, but still a capable starter.

Big fan of stacked chips on the Dline with Griffen who I think could be a great piece in a quality rotational role.. think he’s still a 10sacj guy who defiantly can be an upgrade from Quinn in the run defense department
