Fans of our opponents call the Cowboy's defense terrible

I havent been well the last 2 days , not virus related, I have CLL Leukemia, normally I feel well. Anyways I had alot of time on my hands to view SB Nation sites like the Giants, Minny, Philly and a few others. When talking about the Cowboys I see the same thing written, "they better outscore their opponents because their defense Stinks". I actually think it's approved, new coaches , but we did lose our best cornerback and sack leader, so who knows. My question is what area on the defense would improve it the most and which player out there would help.??

Hope you start feeling better soon.

As for this defense, they have to prove the doubters wrong. I have plenty of doubts myself, especially on the back end.

And if the suspended guys don't come back, the d-line wil be a probelm too.

Right now IMO the biggest glaring need is RDE and pass rush in general. I think some combo of Lewis,Awuzie,Diggs, Brown and Robinson will be at the very least adequate. I am confident this team actually improved re: run defense so we really need Smith and/or Gregory to be reinstated and get pressure on the qb.

Hope you are doing better soon. I'm sure my worries pale in comparison but I know chronic illnesses suck.

I don't think any of us have any real idea of how this defense will look this year with a new DC. The only thing I can say at least it won't be an outdated scheme they're running out there.

Get well. :)

I think defense will be middle of the pack. Which should be good enough counting we have a top 5 offense. Most teams we face will struggle to keep up with us and will start being one dimensional. I expect this defense to be opportunistic.

We NEED to bring in Griffen to this DL

Crawford/Smith/Gregory wont cut it imo. 2 are unreliable and the other one is always hurt
I agree and while I was posting this thread his name was the first that came to my mind. A defensive front four pass rushing the quarterback makes Any secondary alot better. Also thanks for the comments, I am doing alot better than many. Stay well.

In a scenario where Crawford, Gregory, and Aldon Smith play to their potential....that’s the best edge rushing group in the NFL. In the more likely scenario where none of them work out, it’s the worst. Until we know what’s happening with Gregory and Aldon Smith, or if Crawford can get back to his ‘08 form, we can’t really say how good the edge rusher group will be. So on a sliding scale of best to worst, where we sit is a complete unknown. Adding a player like Griffin could be a complete waste or absolutely needed. I’d prefer our FO to wait until mid-training camp to decide.

I am pretty confident that Poe, McCoy, Woods & Gallimore can improve the interior. So there’s a base level of improved play there at least.

No talk of how bad the D has been? Just a pathetic unit. This is no secret.

In a certain sense, these enemy fans are correct. Even the best offense in the world will have a bad day every now and then and depend on its defense for sheer survival. The Rams 1999 Greatest Show on Turf offense piled up 49 points against the Vikings in a wild shootout in the divisional playoffs......then mustered just 11 points the following conference championship game against Tampa Bay. The Rams won and advanced to the Super Bowl only because their defense showed up to play, limiting the Bucs to just six points.

Hope you get better.

The D and ST are the reason the team hasn't performed well for years and I haven't seen any improvement yet with the best DB and pass rusher gone and unknowns in their place. However, their O should keep them in almost every game so they have a chance.

The problem with people defending the D, they use stats and that does not tell the whole story. Watching it game after game does and if the game is dependent on the D to make a stop or get the ball back to the O, this one is very mediocre at that.

Some teams do not have a great D but an opportunistic one like we did in 2014, being 2nd in picks.

New coaches, some different players so we'll see how it is this year. Right now? Unknown.

Although I have some reservations about the D, and even though we lost Quinn, Collins, Heath and Jones, I still believe we are better on defense than last season. The scheme is going to help a ton, plus there is no doubt we're stronger and deeper in the middle at DT. Those two things alone should help this team a ton. Games are won in the trenches you know. And as long as teams can't just pound us up the gut all game we should be ok with our corners and S's.

Our 2 stud LB's should be put in much better positions to succeed than previously. McCoy and Poe are big additions, literally. They will really solidify the middle freeing up the LB's to attack the ball freely. They shouldn't have to deal with free running OG's filling the lanes all game anymore. Gallimore, Woods (once re-signed) and Hill should all learn from them and take big steps forward quickly.

Those things should have a very positive effect on our sack total from last season too. Even with our current crop of DE's, which I think is decent as is, the O-line will have to help the interior guys block the DT's so our DE's should have more success. A rotation with DLaw and Crawford at LDE with Armstrong and Anae at RDE should be better than ok. Adding Smith and Gregory may make it even better, but I wouldn't count to much on that, at least not early on.

I'd still want to bring Griffen in, he could really help IMHO. But even if they don't they should be much better than a year ago.
