Waiting until the deadline is near is one negotiating option. It is not the only one. In the small world of sports contracts there is often a deadline. But in the larger world of business dealings there is not always a deadline.

Or give up a few less points

I'd be OK with giving up a few less points but that's going to take more talent so how this, lets take that 40 and go out and sign some better players on the Defensive side of the ball.

What do you think?

From cowboys standpoint. I don't understand insisting on the 5th year. It makes no sense. If he's bad in 2 years you can cut him easier. If your going to re sign him at the end of year 4 that means he's played great (and hopefully won a SB) in which case nobody is going to care what you give him.

The Dak Prescott negotiations, in a nutshell - ProFootballTalk

The Cowboys are focused on getting quarterback Dak Prescott signed to a new deal before the July 15 deadline for finalizing multi-year contracts with franchise-tagged players. And regardless of whatever has been said or speculated or reported or whatever regarding the negotiations, only two things matter at this point. First, neither side is going to [more]

Yep...…….at the end of the day, Dak will be accepting less than what he really could get. Which seems crazy at 35 million. If Dak is really willing to accept 35 million for 4 years, then the Cowboys need to jump on that. Sadly. Dak has ALL the leverage here. They are betting that Dak doesn't want to tarnish his reputation with the fans or the players. That isn't much leverage.

Owners screwed up the negotiations on this franchise tag thing. It really doesn't give them much leverage at all. Not with QB's.

"By not swooping in and making Prescott an offer he couldn’t refuse the moment he became eligible for a second contract in early 2019, his leverage grew and grew and grew and now he has more of it than any quarterback in league history."

This is 100% true and I put the blame on Stephen Jones for it. He has now mishandled this team's past 3 big contract extensions.

But one key consideration that Florio has not accounted for is the potential impact of a Deshaun Watson extension. If the Texans follow their recent history, they will overpay Watson and reset the market and Dak's asking price.

Two things...……….

1. What makes you think they didn't offer him anything? By my recollection they have been trying to sign him starting at the offseason between is 3rd and 4th years.

2. All this waiting was the EXACT advice of the Dak Troll nation was it not? You even have trolls wanting us to wait yet ANOTHER year. So is this now an admittance that the trolls were DEAD WRONG in that regard?

I just don’t understand why the Cowboys want him so bad.

Their initial offer to him was a multi-year deal at $25 million a year. It was so insulting that his agent just came back with a $40 million a year figure. And then both sides walked away and didn't talk again for months. All the while, the market just kept going up and up and up.

I don't believe that. I do believe it was around 30- or 31 million per year. But no doubt they were trying to get a discount first. But 25 million?

It would be nice to have Dak signed to a team friendly contract right now. I think the Cowboys made a reasonable offer. Dak didn’t accept it. That’s business.

Dak chose to bet on himself. He has played well enough to earn a second contract with the Cowboys. Has he earned the right to be paid the most in the history of the NFL? No. And yet, by all accounts the Cowboys have offered him that much money. And so far Dad has turned it down.

I don’t blame Dak for wanting to get paid, and to his credit he is not talking about it in the media all the time like Dez or Tank did.

On the other hand Dak seems to have gone from “I’m not asking to be the highest paid player in football” to being the highest paid player in the history of the NFL is not enough.

If the Cowboys and Dak are fighting over years I would get a 4 year deal done and move on. I would also be looking for another QB to start at the end of Dak’s contract. I don’t you will be able to reasonably sign Dak at the end of this second deal.

Even on a 4 year deal, you would have his rights 2 more years than that by using the tag.

I am a Dak fan. I think he is better than most of you do. And if the Cowboys have offered to pay him the most money in the history of the NFL and he has turned it down, then we seriously need to look at moving on.

If Dak won’t sign a deal that is on the table I would make him play under the tag this year, and evaluate whether he is worth a second tag at the end of this year.

For the record, I don’t think Andy Dalton is as good of a QB as Dak is, but I do think that with the right coaching, he might win us as many games as Dak would.

This Dalton signing may turn out to be the best Cowboys signing in a long time if he can still play at a reasonably high level, because the Cowboys warm fuzzy feeling about Dak is going to evaporate on or about July 15 if things dont change.

Bingo.

1. Should have extended tank before the first tag.
2. Should have played hardball with Zeke (ala Chargers w/ Gordon
3. Should have locked DAK up at the same time as Wentz & Goff.

Lol.

Melvin Gordon comparisons. Gordon had a single year rushing for more than 1000 yards and a single year with YPC over 3.something

If you make comparisons, it often helps to know something about the comparison you are making. Dude had already been splitting snaps in 2018 as it had become clear that he couldn't be productive as a bell cow.

That's fine. I do. Here's some reading and info from a source that I respect. You can judge for yourself.

It wouldn’t surprise me if that was what they offered Dak. At that time there were reasonable thoughts that Dak might be a bit of a counterfeit. Some of that view has evaporated. On the other hand, with Dak disappearing in some games last year, some people will reasonably take that view.

The Cowboys can be “losers” in this deal no matter how these negotiations turn out. There is a LOT of risk involved in contracts like these. If you swing and miss, it’s sets you back several years.

I'm not comparing players. I know Zeke is better.

However, Zeke had zero leverage as he had two years lest on his deal.

I have no problem with Dak cashing in on for betting on himself and winning. Being the highest paid player in football (even though he is not nearly the best player in football) is enough of a win for betting on himself (at least in my own opinion).

At some point trade him for a huge haul of draft picks, go with Dalton for a year and move on.

Not playing with your best player for 10 games isn't leverage?

It seems that it is not that Zeke had zero leverage but that you don't understand what leverage is.

There is a lot of fretting over Zeke’s contract, which I guess I understand. But you guys should be a lot more concerned about Tank’s deal. Tank makes way more than Zeke, and quite honestly he hasn’t really indicated that he is worth anything near what he is being paid.

At some point, successfully teams will stop letting the market drive player value and put a greater emphasis on what that player is bringing in wins to the organization. Let’s hope Tank justifies his contract numbers and cap hit this year. He was a waste of space last year.

OK, I'm not getting into this again, but I'm team "don't pay huge contract to RBs", so you know where my head is at.
