We hear the same mantra from the defensive coaches: #1 priority need to stop the run, make the opponent become one dimensional.

-We are all aware the Cowboy Rush Defense was exposed in that Ram playoff loss, many would point to the Colt defeat a few weeks prior. Xwalker has explained numerous times how we failed to adjust to the zbs scheme in which New England did against the Rams in the Super Bowl.

-The Cowboy Defense was ranked #11 in the league against the run last season, this was very misleading as the defense struggled badly against the run for the majority of the season. Throw in their inability to stop the screen pass, which is an extension of the run, it was a total disaster. The three NFC North games come to mind, Green Bay, Minnesota and Chicago.

-During the Wade Phillips years as the team's HC/DC, the Cowboys were one of the better run defenses in the league. They were a defense that rarely needed to bring down a safety for run support. Many think the 3-4 scheme is more about disguising who is rushing the passer, but it is actually designed to be a better scheme to stop the run.

-The best alignment to stop the run is the 5-2 front. Five down lineman and two linebackers. Many of the early posts regarding Nolan's scheme has discussed this type of formation. We have discussed 4 down lineman and another DE/SOLB Designated Pass Rusher. This role is more for a DE then it is for a linebacker. That is a 5-2 front and should be strong at stopping the run.

-If the team is unable to win the early rushing downs, we can forget about all those exotic rush packages. Stopping the run is the team;s #1 priority, if that's accomplished, the defense vastly improves this season!

Its fundamental, but as offenses trend to passing, defenses adjust to that, smaller, quicker more cover and vice versa when it flips to teams like the Titans that will pound you with Henry, and then defenses have to adjust as well.
There are teams now that do several phases of the offense well, you have to have versatility and a very athletic defense that can adjust vs opponent every week.
Just without actually checking, but I would be willing to bet that there has been a bigger infusion of offensive talent the last 2 years vs defensive.
When you start looking at the weapons on rosters around the league on offense, I can understand how hard it is to build and maintain an effective defense.
Cant bust on first round selections, that doesn't help.

I see your cunning ploy, make teams play to our weak secondary.

Then again I was surprised at our ranking last year

A defense who has to have the ability to morph into any type of opponent. This is why Bellichek is the best DC in the business. Nolan is going to try to bring in a similar scheme, but has had mixed results. However, I am very intrigued to see what he can do with our defensive roster.

The Cowboys were a top-10 run defense last year.

You can't use a 5-2 other than in goalline or short-yardage situations because teams are primarily in 11 personnel. A 5-2 would get absolutely torched.

And it makes our secondary look better. Predictable passing downs and hoping to have pressure up the middle this year forces a quicker pass. Makes a QB nervous early. But we need to watch that screen, been getting killed for years with that. We can’t stop it on Defense and don’t do it enough with our Offense. Except that WR screen which I am not a huge fan.. lol

#1 job is to stop the run. That hasn't changed. If you cant stop the run you are done.

No coincidence that the first thing MM did was get two run stuffing DT's.

McCoy - 3 years ($18.3m)
Poe - 2 years ($8.5)
Sweet.. I know Aldon is a 1 year deal. Wanted a couple years in case the first year is a learning curve. I figure we will get better as the year goes on. Just not sure how we come out of the gate..

-Also add in press coverage on the outside. Jamming receivers will force QB's to hold onto the ball a little longer.
-Screens are an extension of the running game, if you cannot stop them, teams will exploit this weakness for big plays.

They are in essence going to use a variation of a 5-2 in their base. 7 men in the box won't expose the defense what so ever, it's actually designed to take away a quick/short passing game.

Hope our LBs can stay clean. Or have a DE sniff it out. I think we may have some QBs taking off with the ball on us. Who knows, maybe a sack fest every game.

We do have two, big LB's who have elite sideline to sideline range. Outside of the Lamar Jackson's, we should be fine.

It's pretty simple.

Getting rid of Marinelli and adding Poe, McCoy, Smith and Gregory will be a major steps to improving the DL play.
I wish it was that simple. We have no idea what we’ll get from Smith or Gregory and although not good at the run, we lost our best pass rusher. We also have a DC that had the bottom 10 worst ranked defenses last time he was DC and they continually got worst to almost last in the league then he was fired.

Still lots to prove and lots of questions.

I am pumped for the changes all across the board this year. Hope there is a year.

I think we are all crossing our fingers. Here in NY it's gotten better, but hearing reports in the southern states that it's getting worse, including Texas.

Elite? Jaylon was completely over hyped last year and LVE was a nobody most of last year even before his injury. Not only that but we have no idea how he will be after the injury.

Both have Elite Range.
