10 year contract extension for Mahomes worth $500 million

There were people here claiming Mahomes would go the same route as Dak and demand less years to get to FA again and it would put Dallas in a tough spot.

Whoops. Sorry Dak, sign the 5 year deal and move on.

Ya the 5 year 200 million dollar deal that just became the new number because this deal now moved everything around.

That is not how the contract works. New money is the only thing people are talking about. The new money is 10 years 450 because that was the extension signed. The rookie deal is irrelevant to every part of that.

No.

Nobody is using the 12 year contract as a gauge. They are using the 10 year which is well over 40 million. Its just like the Wentz deal.....France isn't going to be fooled by the wording of a extension.

He still has two years on his current deal. It’s part of the language of the contract. 12 years 474

I thought he would be I didn't think he'd be offered a 10 year deal at 45 million. I Thought he'd sign a 40 million dollar deal for short term and re-up...which btw....he still can do that after 3 years. We know these contracts aren't worth the paper they are signed on.

In no way does Dak deserve even close to the AAV Mahomes got. Mahomes is a SB winning QB.

Dak has never made it out of the divisional round.

Dak should not get a deal with an AAV of $40MM. That's absurd.

Im not sure this is true. Honestly he’s a SB winning QB and depending on the language of the contract it doesn’t look outrageous. Why would a guy with 2 playoff wins decide that he needs more? I like Dak too. Just don’t think this conclusion is automatic
Well, it seems to me when the top-tier going rate increases, so does the second-tier going rate.
Example, I doubt Tannehill gets 29.5 million/yr if Wilson didn't get 35 million/year...

I understand that. But his contract is 45 million per. Dak's deal isn't going to be a extension its going to be a completely new deal. His deal will look more like what Wentz and Goff got excluding their years under their rookie deal.

I'm not for sure where I'm missing how this drives Dak's price up.

In the case of Mahomes, he gets the largest contract in sports history, but the Chiefs get to lock him up for the next 12 years of his playing career. It's essentially a lifetime contract. Mahomes has provided an MVP and a Super Bowl to a franchise. But even with his value, to get his deal, he had to sacrifice long term and not being able to go back and dip his toes of the FA water again to get there.

Dak is asking for his cake, and to eat it to. He wants a shorter term deal, and still wants elite QB money. He wants that extra cake in 4 years where he can come back, look at the cap and request an even larger number. Mahomes had to settle for elite money on a team friendly contract length. This from the best QB in the league currently.

If anything, to me, it strengthens Dallas position on asking for a longer term deal. Mahomes had to give up extra years to get his number. Dak wants his number AND his contract length. Best QB in the game moved. But Dak cannot?
It drives the prove up because 45M AVV is over a 25% increase in highest AVV in football.

KC did what Dak asked Dallas to do... bought the extra year/s.
KC was negotiating at an already record-breaking 40M for 5 year. They gave him 5M AAV to go long.
450M is insane money. Tom Brady has made 235M and played for a zillion years and own a zillion titles.

Mahomes will almost certainly retire a BILLIONAIRE.

I mean it is not that much less than what he would have gotten if he signed a 5 year 200 million dollar deal and then maybe 5 years later signs a 5 year 270 million dollar deal.

If contracts were handed out based on what was deserved nobody would be getting paid. You know that's not how contracts work.

At this point I would be pretty happy giving Dak 4 yr/140 million if the team thinks he's the guy.

Wins are a team stat and not a QB stat or a RB stat or a OL stat.

He is not as good as Mahomes obviously, but his leverage is FAR higher (Chiefs had Mahomes for 4 more years easily with and Dallas has Dak for only 2). The increased leverage means he can demand more than he would have gotten otherwise.

I got it. I’m just looking at it from the standpoint that maybe he already wanted 35-40. We really don’t know. Many swear it was $35 mil with less yrs but never confirmed. Some said he shot for the moon. You may be right. I just think many thought Mahomes would average more than this if what I’m reading is right

yeah Dak deserves as much as Fat Matt in Detroit and Matty Melt in Atlanta, probably as much as Goff and Wince too

Many people don't understand how contracts really work, but that's not surprising.

Plus, because of the length, the $45MM AAV isn't really an accurate way to gauge this because there's probably a ton of funny money in the deal. So any Dak fanboi thinking Dak now deserves $40MM AAV is overshooting.

I seem to recall some people in here arguing me down saying "there will never be a $40+ mil QB". I TOLD YOU.

Daks price just went up.

I've never seen anybody argue that on this board, since the arrival of Mahomes. It could have happened but from everything I've seen recently, everybody has pretty much been anywhere from 40 to 50 on Mahomes. I honestly don't see this changing much, with Dak, to be honest.
