It's all best guess since we never got full details of the offer i just assumed a large signing bonus to get him to around 30m
Ok and I may be wrong here but if he had signed a extension last year that extension wouldn't have kicked in until this year correct?

Playing without fans would cost the NFL 3.2 billion and completely kill the salary cap, meaning salary cap would drop anywhere from 40 to 60 million per team.

The league won’t force teams to cut already signed players to fit under a reduced cap, So having players signed could very well work out better than allowing them to become free agents . Additionally, however it works the situation will apply to all teams, so it won’t just be the Cowboys dealing with it.

I’m not sure what your point is. The reality is the market going up is an assumption that holds no weight right now.

All they get is a 3rd round comp and they are now in the QB carousel where you spend years hoping to get lucky. Hopefully you win that 1/3 but in reality you might as well blow up the team at that point because it is unlikely that you drafted a winner so you might as well stockpile money and young talent and do a full rebuild.

If this scenario were to happen it would be 6 years of not getting it done under Prescott and two years under McCarthy.

Don't you think the team would be looking in another direction? This gives Dallas the leeway to do that.

This is why tagging Prescott twice makes a lot of sense for the team.

why would the Cowboys have to pay $80 million the next 2 years if they sign Dak? Some people talk as if Dak is demanding that, but what evidence is there?

It would actually be more because of the guaranteed monies.

The two year average would be less under the tag.

Correct but they would have gotten the signing bonus last year to make up for his 2m salary
True, but he didn’t forgo that signing bonus money altogether, it just got delayed until a contract does get done. Of course, there would be some value to getting a portion of the money earlier, but I assume Dak’s camp decided it wasn’t enough value to offset what he would have lost under last year’s offer.

Tagging Prescott makes absolute sense also because of COVID. Dallas can just sit tight if they really want to. The league has no idea right now how the fan base is going to affect revenue, meaning they are expecting lost money. And this will also clearly impact TV revenue, because losing fans completely changed the entertainment value of the sport.

Except wins are not a QB stat. Drew Brees had about 7 years of terrible seasons including 3 straight 7-9 seasons with NO and they were not looking to move on from him. QB is the most important position but winning in the NFL is a team effort. You have to have truly terrible (like Detroit levels of terrible) to get top 7-8 picks with one though which does make the job harder but it does not change the fact that winning games in the NFL is a team effort and you do not replace the good pieces when they are playing well. Zack Martin is not on the chopping block for that reason, same with Tyron (though his back might force the issue), and this is because you do not throw the baby out with the bathwater. You build around the hits you get while trying to get more hits. The QB position is a hit. Blowing up the entire roster and trying to start fresh is a multi year project like after the next 2 years it probably being 3 years of not being competitive best case, 4-5 more realistically, just to MAYBE get back to where you are right now.

I agree with that, but it’s also valid to note that the market going down won’t be the blow some think, and in some ways may benefit teams that locked in key players.

This didn’t answer my question because you are still quoting numbers there is no evidence to support. A poster merely saying $80 million or more than $80 million isn’t evidence, it’s just a number that poster chose to use.

There is always exceptions, but economic growth is never infinite. Sports was already hitting bubble levels and that was before COVID came.

The point you're missing is McCarthy.

He is going to be under pressure to win. If in two years he hasn't won with Prescott, he will be moving on.

He didn't draft Prescott and gave him two years to prove it. He will get in Jerry's ear(if still alive) and campaign for "his" guy. And Jerry or Stephen will capitulate.

I agree with that as well, I just don’t think a one year drop in salary cap will be a big problem. If it drops each of the next 2-3 years I think it would.

Negotiations are 2021, so COVID and lost revenue is exactly what is going to set the stage for the CBA.

But it is still tied to revenue isn’t it, so while one year of lower revenue has a negative effect, that doesn’t necessitate that there will be lower revenue, and therefore a lower cap every year.
