Good article! Makes a lot of sense in terms of cash flow and when player actually receives the money. The impact on the CAP and ability to bring in other top level players is also in play.

Looks like a 40 million a year for 5 years. Start trying to go back to the table after year 3.. Then you can have 2 years to prorate or kick the can. This is why we are in trouble now. This is a flat out deal and not a extension like the others..

I didn't think Dak would sign a new contract until Mahomes deal.

But now I do and IF there is $142.5M guaranteed by the Cowboys!!! I don't care about the length cause Cowboys can always come back to the table to renegotiate.

Dak will sign that deal guaranteed!!

Not sure why you'd pay Dak roughly the same cash in his 5 year deal as Mahomes would get in the first 5 years of the "extension" period.

Starting with the 2022 season, Mahomes will pocket $192MM in cash through 2026. Mickey is proposing Dak make $190MM. It's even more lopsided towards Dak if you just count cash paid over the next 5 years given Mahomes will be playing on two cap friendly years where cash payments are low in 2020-21.

$165-175M total contract value over 5 years, makes way more sense and is more than fair.

Like we have said. JJ don’t have the same luxury of having 2 years left on a rookie deal to deal with. Daks deal will be a straight deal.

If I am JJ then I just give him the 4 year deal and tell him you will be going back to the table after 3 years. That way he gets a additional year to prorate some things and move around on the cap. Sign him now and pay him the 37-40 million. Start at 32-35 and go up every year and extend him before year 4 when the big hit is.

So basically cave? I suspect that's what Jerry will eventually do since he always seems to cave.

Over the first five year extension period, the actual cash average for Mahomes is around $38.4MM. Pay Dak the same? Yeah no.

Here is the problem. We have no idea what’s being offered. The only thing I heard was they were really close last season (likely 33-34 a year) until the team got 3 layup games and after the fins game Daks agents pulled the deal.

That’s when I heard 40 million mentioned. At that point talks stopped. Now I hear 36 is in the table. This is all I can go by. Daks agent isn’t going to look at anything but 10 years 450. That’s 45 a year. I would try for 37 and if he says no then let him play for 31 this year and he can get 37 next year.

And someone told me that the Mahommes deal was not a team friendly deal - what a crock. That is a steal for the Cheifs!
extremely team-friendly.

Not quite Brady-like, but close.

Brady did it to assure that he always had an oline and defense.....and he did.

They should have just did the 4 year extension last season. It will bite them in the butt big time.

I don't understand the issue with five years. If Dak wants it to end after four years, you just make that fifth year so heavy on non-guaranteed base salary that the team either has to renegotiate or cut him.

Of course, it's possible that he wants a four-year deal that does the same thing, so he plays for three and the team either renegotiates or cuts him. The problem with that is the payout per year because it doesn't give the team any wiggle room.

Ehhh....well wiggle room is relative.

The Cowboys and Owners self imposed the Cap. They are getting $225 from TV Deal yearly which ends 2022..
In 2010 Owners got $99.9M

Smart teams make it work

Mickey says about Mahomes...

"the already greatest quarterback to ever play in the National Football League"

Mickey, that was Tom on the phone...

this Tom...

... and he said he was just calling to ask if you're feeling okay.

I could very well be wrong, but I don't think the Mahomes contract helped this situation.

In fact I'll go as far as to say it probably hurt things.

He signed a very team friendly deal, and all considered, it would seem to me that the deal Prescott previously rejected is a much more player friendly situation.

Micky makes a good point about Jerry’s cash flow. Very few owners can pay upfront like Jerrah can. The deal will get done. If the guarantees are over 100 million, you gotta take it. The talking heads saying he is better off playing 32 games and making 69 million are fools. Let’s say next season Aaron Rodgers is up for a trade, Mathew Stafford is free from Detroit, Jamies show something with the Saints. All of these guys will be cheaper then 38 million. I would not back the Cowboys in a corner if I was Dak.
