This team has too much talent to be selecting in the Top 3 of the draft to get an elite talent at QB.

As such, not re-signing Dak is a major failure as other have pointed out because he will only continue to gain leverage.

Imagine the Cowboys position if they franchise him again in 2021. Heading into 2022 they will have zero leverage as Dak can walk and they will be left scrambling trying to find their next franchise QB.

Don't always agree with Jeff's takes but this is 100% spot on and very well explained.
Because it is just math.

Mouth-breathers at home crying "it's about championships" don't change that.
This is a job and you get paid for it.
Fair compensation is decided by the math.

It's hardly Dak's fault the team decided to have the 31st rated special teams last year when he was on the last year of cheap cap hits.
If they couldn't build elite special teams and defenses with him making 400k that's a mgmt problem.

If getting to the Super Bowl was the major factor goofballs pretend Joe Flacco and Colin Keapernick would still be signed to massive deals right now.

Dak is exactly the kind of player you do sign.
Young, durable and ascending with noticeable steps forward in development.

This video was interesting so I’d thought I’d share. Explains why not getting Dak deal done last year was a mistake and how difficult a long term deal will be next year.

Its not going to be difficult at all b/c nobody is paying Dak as much money as we just offered. This is a Leveon Bell situation where the player is overvaluing himself and the team isn't biting.

Dak and Todd France are playing a game a poker with Jerry but Jerry knows they are bluffing. Dak doesn't have an attractive plan B option. His options for 2020 were to make 31 million in Dallas or holdout and make far less in 2021.

Except leveon is a running back and Dak is a QB......Phillip rivers is old and washed and he just got 25 million. When cousins hit the market he got the highest paid contract in NFL history....so again what was that about nobody is going to pay him? He’s getting at least 40 just based off common sense

It means whatever fits someone's narrative.

*Cowboys offer Dak $100 million guaranteed*

*Dak turns it down*
*Translation: the Cowboys weren't sold on him*

It also means these football wizards are going to be looking for another QB soon. I'm sure they'll nail it this time. :muttley:
Well they tripped over the last two, so...

It’s not a Leveon Bell situation. The supply and demand market at QB is so much different than RB.

Some team will pay Dak top dollar to be their QB. If not Dallas, someone else.

Rivers is reunited with France Reich and had his red number with them and now is with one of the best OL in the league. In 2018, he was the most pressured QB in the league. With no pressure, Rivers is going to pick defenses apart. He even led the league in passing yards last year under pressure.

According to Reich, he already knows about 85% of the system. And Rivers skills hasn’t diminished. Dak isn’t even close to Rivers. That’s an insult to compare the two. Rivers under this line and RG and speed at WRs would be throwing all overt the place.

Rivers is still considered elite with explosive passing plays and they had 57 last year. Dude has no line and was constantly pressured.

I can’t wait to see this guy play behind this personnel.

Come what may, I'm pulling for the Cowboys team, as a whole, to prosper, rather than one man. The Cowboys will continue to keep trucking, regardless of what Dak and his self-serving agent have to say. The Cowboys have been fair and realistic in their contract proposals. If Dak and Todd can't see fit to resolve their differences in a reasonable fashion, good luck to both of them in their travels. The team will continue on, in the meantime! ;)

leave it up to hillbilly zone to post nonsense like this...
As Jeff explained if Dak hits unrestricted free agency he makes 40M AAV.

I'm pretty sure even the dumbest board members understand the diffeerence between LeVeon Bell after sitting out a full season and a top 10 QB under 30 years old.

Missed the point. Leveon overvalued himself and cost himself a boatload of money......just like Dak is doing right now.

Cousins was a safer bet and is a better Qb than Dak.....better arm.....better accuracy......better pocket awareness. It was easy to speculate that Cousins would improve with better talent around him. While nobody has been consistently surrounded by more talent than Dak. Whose going to bring in Dak and surround him with a better OL? Better RB? Better Wrs? Dak can turn that narrative around this year but that's the book so far. The Cowboys contract offer was more than fair. It was generous.

Good listen, I agree that both sides botched the F out of this.

Like Jeff says, the math doesn't lie. If Dak wants to milk every penny he can get it will be on the open market. Dallas is not going to pay him top dollar.

This is a Kurt Cousins 2.0 situation...….two tags then unrestricted free agency.

People keep saying "Dak hits the open market in a couple of years." I don't see that in our interest.

We have a starting quality QB on the bench. Trade Dak. Spend 31.4mil elsewhere. Move on.

For this year:
Dalton + 31.4mil > Dak

For next year - I'd rather draft and start a rookie than pay Dak 38mil.

Not all drama is good, even for PT Barnum. Kirk Cousins drama for the next couple of years is bad for the team and the fan base. Move on.

You saying Kirk is better than Dak is completely subjective yet you are saying it like its facts lol. Whether you think he’s better or not that doesn’t really matter, they are close and that’s the point. Dak actually has a better resume and numbers than Kirk did going into FA so what do you think a QB needy team is going to pay him. Look I get it you don’t like Dak, but you don’t have to say stupid stuff to try to prove your point. Dak is getting paid either way and the idea that he “cost himself a boatload of money” literally makes no sense. Simple math disputes that claim. I’m sure you can do math can’t you?

Except Minny was sold on that they were 1 "real" QB away from a Super Bowl, who else was really in the sweepstakes for Cousins

There’s always a team or two out there that thinks they’re a QB away from competing for a championship. That’s just kind of how the NFL works.

If Roethlisberger or Rivers retire. You think the colts or Steelers won’t think they’re a QB away from competing? With the rosters they currently have?

If Brees retires or Tom Brady retires. You think the Saints and Bucs won’t feel they are a QB away from staying competitive with their rosters?

Can anyone name the last time a QB with Dak’s resume didn’t get signed to a long term deal when on the open market?

One could argue Cam Newton. Though I think his situation is different due to his recent injuries. Without the injuries cam probably never makes it to FA though.

Saints yes, maybe. Bucs of hell no signing Tom and Gronk is a hail mary. I respect Tom but at this point he is average he may be good for an extra win or two but he could be old enough to cost them a game or two. I blame Zimmer for making Minny's FO think they were a QB away. IT hardly ever works out when a team thinks they are QB away to go out and sign a high priced FA to fill that void. Todays NFL is a high wire balancing act too much spent on this or not enough spent on that you end not hoisting the Lombardi.

It's not like he is asking to average over 40m/yr.

I dont think anyway.

He is just going to insist on a three year deal and Jerry is just going to have to live with doing it.

Still say they royally botched it by using the exclusive tag while knowing they wanted much more than they were willing to do.

In Dallas, only the fans pay for GM mistakes.
