They could free up the cap space if they needed to, they just don't want to. I don't blame them...Clowney is a huge question mark.

And things like this is why I've waited to say that this McCarthy era is any different. Sure they addressed DT finally but they are playing a very risky game at De. I don't think the situation is as bad as what they did at receiver but basically Allen Hurns is what Aldon Smith is. They have high hopes but its unfair to even Aldon to expect him to be the same guy or even a shell of his former self. I do wonder if McCarthy is why Griffin isn't here or if Griffin's salary demands are too high.

I'm going with salary demands being too high.

That's why all of the guys out there are still available.

I agree with that. I can't really justify retaining a mediocre-at-best DT who's also not well suited to play DE.

Nobody can.

Least of all the Cowboys organization.

They look like fools.

If there was a player out there with Clowney's production, missed playing time, asking price and did not have the Clowney name, would anyone still want him?

Asking .... for a friend

Yeah They sure don’t seem to be in a rush for him to even take a cut for some reason...let alone releasing him....

My last hope for their sanity is the possibility that they want to get him in the building to pass a physical first. So they wouldn't have to deal with an injury grievance situation.

Possible but at his age what on earth could those demands be?

Clearly higher than any team believes he's worth.

Im not saying our D-line is great, the question is who are these linebackers you thought you had are they the young killers they showed couple years ago or are they the group that cant make plays in the run game..... i don't know it was such a lucky thing our d line especially Lawrence was killing the QB when teams where having so much trouble running the ball on these linebackers.....the turn around form verge of greatness to bad was incredible. Maybe we dont need Clowney we just need the Linebackers to play like they have shown they can play.

we have enough bodies and competition at end. We dont HAVE to sign anyone, especially someone expensive. Like the idea of the young dudes competing for a role rather than signing a hype king.

Bodies doesn't equal talent.

There is a dearth of talent at RDE right now. Your "theory" here was the exact same theory they had with WR in 2018. Had a lot of bodies, young guys would show out, WR would be fine.

What happened?

Griffin is going to end up signing a one year deal for like $9-10MM and he'd make this one of the better starting front fours in football.

And yet, our front office sits on their collective thumb watching 2012 NFL highlights of Aldon Smith thinking the tape was from 2019.

And paying that above-mentioned $9 million to Tyrone Crawford, who couldn't carry Griffen's jock.

wr and DE are vastly different. Not equal at all. Joe Jackson,ANAE, Jelks and others need a crack at it before we go sign a mercenary. I wanna see if the new staff can develop a guy first. If not, by mid season, sure lets go sign whomever is left.

Those guys are backup types. Counting on any of them to be a legit starting RDE is foolish.

They have legit options out there and are ignoring them because they are banking on a guy who hasn’t taken a NFL snap since 2015 and a guy they can’t admit isn’t as good as they thought he would be.

@BAT If Clowney is so good, why is he still available? Plenty of teams out there with the cap space to sign him. Yet no one chomping at the bit to sign him.

Count me as interested when his price comes back down to reality.

Yeah, like somewhere in the 8-9 mil range.
