In addition to this, apparently there is this guy who has trademarked a bunch of potential names they were interested in.For clarity purposes, the reason the Washington Football Team is proceeding in this manner has more to do with marketing analysis and the legal process than showing some kind of incompetence.
Deciding on a name that works socially, economically and legally, is not a short process. Once their attorneys file the trademark application(s), it may take 4-6 months for each application to be reviewed by an attorney at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). That was prior to COVID 19 and the altered work arrangements we have all gone through. While under review, USPTO attorneys will check to ensure the TM application doesn't have mistakes and the mark doesn't conflict or possibly lead to confusion in commerce with another mark. So that can lead to the process taking even longer.
This isn't a short process at all. I have filed many, many in my legal career.
