How will Mike McCarthy’s love of fullbacks manifest in Dallas?

The new head coach certainly loves his fullbacks

Mike McCarthy may not be calling the plays on offense - Kellen Moore will continue to do so - but the veteran head coach is still looking to infuse his own offensive philosophies with Moore’s. Some things, like frequent passing on early downs and loads of play-action, will easily translate from McCarthy to Moore. But what about the fullback position?
It was rarely used by Moore last year, but McCarthy’s record of utilizing fullbacks in a variety of ways could change that in 2020.

Maybe so.

Didnt they sign a pair of UDFAs?

I'd prefer to move ahead with a MM handpicked one as opposed to Olawale at whatever dumb number they gave him.

i would have liked to have replaced incumbent leftover FB Jamize Olawele who brings zero physicality to the position
He's not a true FB, but more of a finesse oriented FB. He's not gonna punished tacklers with his lead blocks and
paved the lanes for zeke, pollard. And they talk about his ability to run and catch, but it's so many ball touches to give and distribute
without it being wasted on Olawele. I'd much give those touches catch/run to reserve Pollard.

Supposed the other reason why vet Olawele was reportedly valued by the previous coaching regime was his special teams work.
and it's still said that OC Kellen Moore has always been fond of Olawele's services.

If we are needing a John Kuhn like FB that brings a physical presence, and can catch and run a bit as Kuhn did in his prime, then
we had hope converted TCU back Sewo Olonilua whose changing from RB to FB and said to have terrific weight room strength could be
end up being Kuhn like.

Sewo was said to be a fine power oriented ball carrier (shared carries with teammate Anderson) with surprising receiving ability at TCU, (when called for ) but the blocking/special teams work would still have to be under fire.

I'm not sure Sewo will have sufficient time to prove himself... so it's a chance we'll be 'forced' to roll with finesse disappointment Olawele again.

I’m glad this thread was posted. I think some fans don’t realize McCarthy has some history using a running game, including a FB, and instead think that because he had a great passing QB With Rodgers that his offensive philosophy is almost completely focused on the pass.

i actually think it will have to be McCarthy and the way he utilizes his backs both RB and FB ...into both the run game and the pass game
(vs Kellen Moore) that will end up being a huge key in better utilizing and revamping the use of the RBs in this offense.
Maybe Kellen is better at designing and scheming for the WRs and TEs, than he is the RBs.

i cannot remember any more than 2 or 3 big receiving plays from all our backs combined in the pass game past entire past year.
Even that once effective quick screen passes that Zeke used to be money on, .just disappeared .

Big Mike doesn't have to do much to be better than Jason in that category. Jason was okay with adding Olawale to the team at a price tag of 5.4 million with 2.8 guaranteed just to cover kickoffs and punts. 0 carries and only two receptions for 13 yards in 2 yearso_O are you kidding me. Looking forward to seeing how McCarthy utilizes his personnel. The only thing Clappy was good at was throwing them under the bus:)

Olewale was going to waste as an offensive contributor in JG's regime. I hope Sewo Olonilua takes that post in 2020.

Not many teams use a traditional FB in these modern schemes today. Usually when a team sees a full back enter the game, they know a run play is most likely coming. MM offense's in the past certainly had a history with the use of the FB, but I wouldn't be surprised if the FB position here is used more like an H-Back.

But many times it is how they design and scheme the formations with the FB into the run or pass scheme, Kyle shanahan occasionally
uses a FB, but it's not instantly and always straight up I formation as FB is traditionally used. teams..

And some of these successful teams that used the FB , opposing teams know and see teams using a FB , know the offenses like to use FB running the ball,.. but yet they still cannot stop it.

- Keith Davis was in the game, that was an indication of an up coming running play... yet still teams had issues trying to stop zeke
- Vikes FB CJ ham was in the game but still Darrin Cook was able to run amok on defenses.
- i've seen games where even the Pats have gone with using the " occasional ' FB in their offense.

Fullback vs H- Back ? i'm just as fine with that, ( an on- the -move FB) so long as it can be proven to work and be effective.

KMoore runs an AIrCor offense.

Is that compatible with WestCoast?

which means Jerry is still calling the shots.

reminds me of Garrett and Wade back in the late 2000’s.

the casualty in all this was MColombo. He gets fired because Mike wanted Philbin to be the shadow OC.

not happening.

Total nonsense.

McCarthy coaches to his lineup.

Any play with a FB on the field is one where either Gallup, Lamb, or Cooper is off the field.

Now think about the situations you'd see that ... short yardage with a 2nd TE, 2RB situations with Pollard. Now think how often we are going to use a full back and dismiss this article as nonsense.

Can you imagine the post game press conference. "Why did Lamb only get 20 snaps today?" "Well, years ago when I coached the Packers our FB caught a bunch of passes, so I figured we'd prioritize that sort of approach."

I would like to see the use of a traditional FB, one who has the versatility to do everything; block, run, catch, etc. 49ers is the best example of how to use a FB effectively, it could be a real nice weapon within a offense. Garrett preferred the use of multiple TE's. The team's personnel just doesn't have such a player. Jarwin in my opinion, is more of an H-Back type of player.

The position is slowly being faded out kind of like the strong safety position. Colleges are using less and less traditional FB's. We are seeing the position have little to no value in the draft process.

I think FB may be a bit more active but you play to the strength of your team based on the talent level you have at the various positions.

True. But sometimes I wonder what's worse, showing run out of the I-form, or surprising the defense with that crap handoff out of shotgun? The Vikings last year ran the ball down our throats out of the I formation. Most teams don't try to hide run or pass today anyway.

Pats use the FB quite a bit in the modern NFL. James Develin was a good fullback who just retired. He was on the team since 2013 paving the way for their RB's at times.
Danny Vitale their new one, is a bit more versatile but tbd how well of a blocker he is.

With the lack of a preseason being a sure thing, it's entirely possible that the offensive changes will be kept to a minimum for a while. The new staff will gradually install their changes in highly incremental degrees to keep the offense simple and workable in the early stages of the season. It might be mid season or later before much change is readily apparent.

That situation has much to do with Kellen Moore being available and there to implement plays that have prior recognition. We'll be keeping things simple until familiarity with MM's methods are gradually being attained. I see the addition of McCarthy's offensive scheme being a slow and quite cautiously added procedure. Let's not foolishly expect a flood of changes early on. That's definitely not to say it won't be intriguing, however.

Olawale knows the offense far better than any rookie will learn it in this short time.
He will be the FB unless the UDFA Olonilua is some kind of rare gem. I doubt it comes down to saving cap space. Unless they need $$ to sign Clowney or Griffin. But they can easily get that by letting Crawford go. However what he still brings to the defense is better than what a FB brings to the offense.
They can have a TE, like Schultz learn some of those plays.
