The smile on Jerrys face when CD was still on the board wasnt only because CD was still there, part of Jerrys smile was because adding CD to an already formidable offense gives Dak one less excuse.

Make no mistake we all wanted Dak to be the next Roger, Troy, Romo, but after his rookie season and onwards Dak imploded himself out of a contract and soon a job!

The Jones will cave in they are known for tough talk and soft action.

The funny thing is if they cave and give him a four-year deal next year, they will have gotten the five years they were apparently asking for this year, counting the tag.

Of course, they appear to have wanted the five-year deal to better spread out the cap and create maneuverability.

I can't help but to picture Dak shaking his head, while reading the comments that Stephen Jones made here! :banghead:

It's always easy to look back in hindsight and pick an exact time when something should have been done or said.

But I do agree with you.

However maybe they did try to sign Prescott and it wasn't agreed?

Prescott struggled in 2017 and performed better in 2018 but the front office evidently were yet to be fully convinced or they would have signed him there and then.

I would have signed him in 2018 as realistically we weren't going to move on from him at that point for a few years and it would have given us a far better opportunity of trading him in the future should it be necessary.

It's why the Eagles made a smart move in drafting Hurts in the second round. If Wentz struggles to stay on the field with injury and Hurts comes in and does well then they can trade Wentz who they have signed on a long term contract. And someone would come in for him with a good offer. In my view we should have drafted Hurts in the second and as you state, signed Prescott back in 2018.

Keep your options open in the best interests of the team.
Exactly!!!

:hammer:

The Romo progression was a perfect path to follow. They signed Romo as soon as he showed signs of Franchise caliber QB play and built around Romo. Zeke was final piece. Dak was just a smart move taking a QB.
The Romo injury really turned this Franchise on its head.

Arguably we should have even drafted a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round a year or two even before Prescott was drafted in the 4th round.

I think drafting a QB between rounds 2-4 should be done every 2-3 years regardless. Worst case scenario you have a trading commodity either way or the future starter for several years.

Hey I was alive and well during the post-Aikman years and I remember how awful it was. It’s hard to choose, either be cap strapped to an above average QB because that’s the market, or let McCarthy shoot his shot in the draft.
I was around post Aikman as well. Unfortunately a lot of fans on here became fans with Romo at the helm. Hence why he is worshipped like a god on here.

Stephen has indicated his belief that Dak will do for the Cowboys what Mahomes did for the Chiefs, specifically, lead them to a Super Bowl championship. He has indicated that he believes this 100%. Cap management is for teams trying to create more space for enough additional talent to catch up to the SB champions.
cap management is something all teams have to deal with. whether they are superbowl contenders or not. we're putting together a strong offense. that requires good wr's, o-line, rb and qb. dak might be lacking some of mahomes ability but we've got the rest. and dak's the best we have at qb. but he must show some appreciation for salary cap management. there's just one pie. he can't have it all.

roger and troy were not saddled by a lousy head coach. romo and dak had to deal with garrett. i wouldn't make final judgment on dak until i see what he can do under mac's coaching. we tout mahomey, but he has andy reid. to a lesser degree, garoppolo, but he has shanahan. wilson has pete carroll. lamar jackson has harbaugh. brady always had belichick. brees has sean payton. dak only had the totally buffoonish garrett.

I'm not denying that there is a salary cap that pays all the players. I'm saying that very poor management of that cap by the Jones's is a major contributing factor to their failure to win a championship since it's inception.

They paid everyone drafted in 2016 on the team except the one with the greatest ability to effect the outcome of the season. In the end, the results are always the same, we lose the players we should have kept while overpaying the ones that weren't as important.

You proved that you do not know as much about the cap as you think you do. Prior to the salary cap, Jones went out and got the deepest team anyone had. He got players to be backups that after the cap started became starters on other teams and he paid them like starters while on the Cowboys to keep them and keep them happy. Then the cap started and the Cowboys were so far over the cap that they had to let much of that depth walk and still had to renegotiate many contracts just to scrap up enough money to sign their draft choices. Then there was no rookie cap. This was all the while trying to keep a 3 time Super Bowl winning team together. Those renegotiated contracts added dead money on to the cap thus greatly reducing the amount of cap space they had to resign players and sign rookies. So the vicious cycle started. To be able to sign their stars and rookies and an occasional cheap free agent they had to renegotiate contracts every year and every year that ended up putting dead money on the cap; Now between this and free agency that kept increasing the cost for player just like today, this cycle continued until about 6 years ago when two things started. First Jerry and Stephen didn't resign some of their players so they didn't have to renegotiate contracts or least as many until eventually none and the 2nd thing was the cap started to make bigger jumps in the increases to the cap each year by moving into the 2nd half of the TV contracts that called for those bigger jumps. Even though the TV contracts are not the only factor in the formula for the cap, it is the biggest part. But there were still a couple more years where there was enough dead money to affect who they could sign. An example of how the Cowboys finally broke that vicious was when DeMarco Murry wanted this huge 5 year contract that the Cowboys won't agree to and let him walk. He signed that big 5 year contract with the eagles but after just 1 season they traded him away for just a 4th round pick to the titans who after just 2 seasons cut him and he was out of football and eventually retired. He never saw the end of that 5 year contract.

Now what this all means is because two teams, the packers and browns who had no way to try and keep up with how much Jones was willing to pay for players convinced enough of the other owners to level the playing field and start a cap. At that time there were only 2 other owners who could try to compete for players with Jones and the Cowboys but the majority of owners then couldn't so they agreed to start the cap.

Now after the last Super Bowl the Cowboys won, Super Bowl XXX, the next ten winners, actually 6 teams because of multiple wins, were teams when the cap started had some of the lowest player salaries and had money every year to replenish their teams with. All of these things have a direct bearing on why the Super Bowl wins had stopped, that and some of the coaches the Cowboys had like Gailey, Campo and Garrett..

The proof is in the pudding.

Jerry Jones did what? Over the past 25 seasons the Cowboys have accomplushed what?

How long after Tom Landry's last appearence in an NFC championship game before he was informed, by Jerry himself, that a different coach should rebuild the Dallas Cowboys?

Whatever reason you will give me to justify his departure, now tell me why it shouldn't apply to Jerry Jones.

I said "shouldn't'" Being the owner is a sad reality, not a justification.

You think I don't know why the championships stopped? Over the past 25 seasons, what is the one common element that every one of those seasons have in common other than the fallure to reach an NFC conference championship, much less a Super Bowl.

Not important, of ciurse if you judge a team by numbers instead of hardware.

By the way, Coach Tom Landry was fired six seasons after he took the Cowbiys to an NFC championship game....three years in a row.

First lets get a couple things CORRECT. Landry was a great coach but his final 3 seasons were all under 500, the last with only 3 wins. Next it is VERY common for a new owner to change coaches so to make a big deal out of Landry getting replaced is foolishness. Next your EXTREMELY foolish statement and I'll quote you "Whatever reason you will give me to justify his departure, now tell me why it shouldn't apply to Jerry Jones". How about because Jones is the owner so what is he supposed to do, say gee we lost so I better sell the team? You also proved you have a reading and/or comprehension problem not getting that before there was a cap Jones built a 3 time Super Bowl winning team but then the cap came along and because of not just what he paid the starters but he paid the biggest and best depth in the league like starters too, the Cowboys were in cap hell for twenty years. I know the truth just doesn't fit into your thinking but that is your problem.
