Wha

Does anybody believe a good DT would help or make this defense better for now?If so why not get one?

Prime example is Kansas City.

they have Jones, Nnadi and Pennel. They make guys like Hitchens and Wilson who were decent here look much better

..remember Jaylon and LVE were considered a top LB core 2018? They were playing lights out. Making tackles, stopping runs, defending plays..etc. I couldn't believe it and thought we got finally blessed with winning formula in our LB spot.

.....>>>fast forward, they have basically disappeared as fast as they appeared. What happened? Coaching? Talent? Bad Luck? The Jones family? Or its just to complicated?

....I'm going with the complicated part.
Because they somehow convinced themselves that Jaylon is good based on one hustle tackle he made against New Orleans, and they drafted a guy from Boise State who many teams didn't even have on their draft boards because he had a severely degenerative neck injury.

Jaylon is a mindless pirate on a pogo stick, and Vander Esch is one minor bump away from retirement.

Can't be the scheme because last year we wanted Rod gone and now a different scheme but same results. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, guess what that animal is?

Jaylon is awful. He has no instincts, makes business decisions on the field, and has no pulse on how unlikeable he is.

LVE is a competitor, but from what I see on film, it's hard to make an impact on a play when you're taking on blocks from Guards and Centers because your DL is getting blown immediately off the ball. No LB in the league can shed a block from a guy like Brandon Scherff.

That’s what I was trying to say

Still have NO IDEA why they extended this guy. This magical 2018 season must have happened while I was on a bathroom break. Its almost as if people don't understand that LBer play is a down in and down out....week to week expectation.....especially if you are highly compensated. He is living off that one hustle play against DeShan Watson....and even then....I think his clean hit on Watson hurt him more than it hurt Watson. Didn't that hit send Smith flying?

It’s called game tape. Once teams saw how they got washed out in blockers and bite on play action or misdirection it was game over.

I guess if it’s up to you to make every tackle all game long then the stats add up. I think he makes mistakes but I wonder how many the line makes. Seems they get pushed back every play.
Well said. The guys up front are supposed to keep the opposing o-line off the lb's as much as possible. Our lb's have left to fend for themselves.

And the line is getting hands on them. But when they are clean they hit the wrong gap or miss a tackle. I watched LVE miss a few tackles. And safety out of position and taking really bad angles.

The problem is just the d-line and not Jaylon Smith ? Because of some empty stats ? Dude, you should watch #54 play. They show it on TV. Wow.
I do not believe jaylon is an all pro. But i doubt any lb or group of lb's would be successful behind this d-line.

Jaylon plays to not get hurt and he’s football-dumb; those are two of the worst qualities a LB can possibly have

.....you have to wonder how he got this far in the NFL? Only someone like Jerry could bypass dumb football smarts and pay the guy.

The answer was on display Sunday. Jaylen leads the NFL in tackles. He and LVE combined for 24 tackles Sunday, but they were fighting through and around OLmen who didn’t have to block the DTs.
Washington’s LB Holcomb looked like a pro bowler because he was running free to Zeke, to the QB, even to the wideouts on screens. When you have a dominant DL, LBs run free.

I would love to say that Jaylon is a tackling machine I really would. But he makes the majority of his tackles beyond the line of scrimmage. He doesn't stack and shed, is easily fooled by play action or misdirection, and is unable to get low, take on a block holding his ground while freeing up his outside arm to tackle the ball carrier. He plays standing straight up and skates backwards when taking on blockers more akin to a cb. You'll see him get thrown out of the play by a pulling OL with just a shove because he's playing so straight up and often times backpedaling. There is a reason why the Cowboys were dead last against the RB screen last season. I have nothing against Jaylon but he is at this point a terrible LB.
