Is it crazy to think the Cowboys could take a quarterback if they have one of the top picks in next spring’s draft? Yes,” Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “You’re asking me is it crazy to bring the idea up and I’m answering it, yes. We’re playing games here guys, but it’s not the thing to be talking about here at all. You know, Dak is our quarterback.”

Like father, like son.
I don't think many of us doubted that would be his point of view. Of course, it's not like Jerry's never changed his mind at the last second, and if he were to see an opportunity to sell more jerseys, who knows?

Here’s a list of the qbs taken in the top 10 of the draft for last 10 yrs

’20 Burrow-1, Tagovailoa-5, Hebert-6

’19 Murray-1, Jones-6

’18 Mayfield-1, Darnold-3, Allen-7, Rosen-10

’17 Trubisky-2, Mahomes-10

’16 Goff-1, Wentz-2, Apple-10

’15 Winston-1, Mariota-2

’14 Bortles-3

’13 none *EJ Manuel -16

’12 Luck-1, Griffin-2, Tennehill-8

’11 Newton-1, Locker-8, Gabbert-10

’10 Bradford-1

In 10 years 24 qbs have been selected top 10 and only 1 (Mahomes) is the homerun.

Do you think that given one shot Jerra and Stevie can hit the bullseye?
In fairness, most of those QBs were selected by teams who had early choices because the team was really bad. One QB isn't usually going to turn a franchise around. On the other hand, a top QB given the offense Dallas has would have a much better chance of success.

Teams that have a Young Top-10 QB don't draft a QB high.

Feel free to point me to any evidence pointing to the contrary. I'll wait.

Disagree. About half the QBs on that list are (or were during their prime years e.g. Cam) NFL starting quality QBs.

Again, why is he announcing this instead of using it as leverage against Dak and against other teams to possibly force them to trade up? This old man will never ever see a super bowl again in his life, and I for one wouldn't be mad. He's gonna go down with out one cause of his own stubbornness.
Kinda sounds like you're already mad.

I think it's even crazier that some of you fans think/thought Jerry would draft a QB. It's pretty clear the FO likes Dak.

Now, with all that said, this is all just formal chatter. He isn't going to come out this early and be like, "Oh yeah definitely taking a QB. Sucks to be you Dak! ahahaha!" If they have hopes or plans they're not going to show their hand at this point, on a morning radio show.

If they can't agree on a contract, they don't have Dak now. Sure, they can slap the tag on him for one more year, but then what?

Absolutely. If the Cowboys can't sign Dak by the draft then you look at drafting a QB.

But I think Dak will be signed to a long term deal VERY quickly in the offseason (if the rumors that he and the Cowboys were in agreement but just missed the deadline)

So I am acting under the assumption (which I fully acknowledge can bite me in the you know what) that Dak will be under contract before the Draft.

Not sure fans realize the passion Jerry has for Dak..
Some fans do not acknowledge it, not all fans. Jerry's devotion has been transparently apparent since as early as mid/late October 2016. It is highly likely the elongated contract negotiations is clouding perception in some eyes but it is equally likely some observers are reading too much into it.

No "GM" in the NFL would get into a discussion about who They'll be drafting next year 8 games into the season.
There are many big sticks to beat JJ with, this isn't even a twiglet.

OMG, this is such a facepalm. Crazy to even think about it? Come on. I would be okay if he said something like, "We feel good about Dak's recovery and that we'll do well with him." I could live with him saying that, but to pronounce that even considering drafting a QB is "crazy," that's just so out of touch with reality it's absurd. We don't even know for sure that Dak will heal up and be as good as before. He might. But we don't know for sure. Even if he's healed and as good as new, he's not locked up in a contract with us. He might look at how bad this team was this year and decide to move on. I honestly would not blame him if he did. With our QB situation being essentially up the the air, to say drafting a QB is "crazy" is just plain foolishness. Even if Dak's health is restored and he decides to play for us, having a quality QB to compete with him is a perfectly good strategy. Joe Montana and Steve Young were teammates for a few years. So were Morton and Staubach, and Staubach and White, Aikman and Beuerlein.

What the BLEEP, Jerry Jones?

Non factor.

1 - Jets : Trevor Lawrence
2 - Jaguars : Justin Fields

3 is too rich for Wilson, Lance or Trask. Lock up Dak and spend your draft riches on Defense. Give me all of our picks on some straight dogs on defense. Tired of this weak finesse crap.
Defense!

Only this uniquely inept front office would already be projecting to the entire league their lack of interest in any draft picks.

Fans will debate, speculate and pontificate about the QB situation ad nauseam until the Cowboys ink #4 to a contract.
When is the earliest date front offices and agents can (openly) negotiate then finalize player contracts in the upcoming off-season?

'Crazy' is an unqualified GM who refuses to keep all options open and instead gets caught up in his feelings.

That's 'crazy'.
EXACTLY!

Why in the WORLD would you risk maximizing what you could get in return for a top 3 pick by running your mouth?

The answer is he likes to hear himself talk even if it's at the expense of the team.

He thinks he is doing the right thing and Dak will cave because Jerry was nice to him in the media.

Guess what? Hasnt worked this far and wont at any point.

I really have no idea how this man got as far in business as he has given his inability to separate emotions and not tip his hand.

Jan 3.

It wont stop then either. He will need to win a SB before he will be fully accepted.

But....fret not....we are very close. If dont believe that just ask Jerry....he'll tell you the same.

Depends on if he means it. If this is just stupid talk, fine. However, if he's serious that he wouldn't even consider it, that's dumber'n dog poop. Everything should be considered by the GM.
You have a QB that’s under contract this year
You will very likely attempt to sign that QB after this year
So why go out and say you’d like to replace him when the odds of getting one of the top QB’s is slim right now
If that changes then the answer will probably change too
