Jerry: It's crazy to think about drafting a QB high

The Cowboys don't sign top tier free agents.
Take that off the board.
Nor would they have the cap space if they wanted to this year. You would get a solid haul for a trade back out of the #1 or #2 pick. Would a pick around #10 + two 2nd round picks + a couple patch job FAs be enough to fix the defense? It could, but you would need a lot to go right.

Again, why is he announcing this instead of using it as leverage against Dak and against other teams to possibly force them to trade up? This old man will never ever see a super bowl again in his life, and I for one wouldn't be mad. He's gonna go down with out one cause of his own stubbornness.
because you can't use leverage you do not have. the prizes are lawrence and fields. thoughts to the contrary are not sound.

Dak's agent, listening to Booger & Son announce their plans to the world.

That's the thing though, just because Jerry and Stephen are saying something doesnt make it so, especially in season. They will say what ever PC answer they need to. Who knows if they would even consider a QB or not, but until you are in a position where one may fall in your lap you down play it completely. If you don't all you accomplish is making your current QB upset.

No I understand. I’m not saying it’s an absolute or the truth at all. Just not sure why you’re chastising anyone here when it’s the FO that said it

And with a top 5 pick in each round you have a much higher probability of just that. Also. You can definitely build a defense if you pay Dak. Atlanta did after paying Ryan and Julio. I think it will be fine.

this is literally the best and most likely option and I’m really struggling to see why anyone would think otherwise. Cowboys aren’t FA players, and even if they were you have to have available talent that wants to come here. Signing dak (because of what he’s shown and for continuity) and using rare high picks on D is a godsend

I think the D is showing signs of life. Even if they don’t land that transcendent blue chip talent in the draft, I think just an infusion of solid youth would go a long way.

Depends on if he means it. If this is just stupid talk, fine. However, if he's serious that he wouldn't even consider it, that's dumber'n dog poop. Everything should be considered by the GM.
why consider that which is totally unrealistic. whoever has the first pick is taking lawrence or holding out for multiple number ones and two's for him if they already have a star qb. but none come to mind that will have the first pick. most likely the jets. so again, why consider that which is totally unrealistic?

Are you talking about Brett Farve / Aaron Rodgers?

If so, in 2005 when GB selected Rodgers, Brett Farve was 35 years old. He may have still been a Top-10 QB, but he was clearly not young.

When the Colts selected Andrew Luck in 2012, Peyton Manning was not only was 36 years old, he missed the entire 2011 season with a neck injury.

So in both cases, those picks made sense. Their franchise QB was old and getting close to retirement. Dak is no where near the age of either Farve or Manning when those teams made the heir apparent picks.

cowboys had aikman, took walsh in supplemental draft.

True and at least you got the age part right. But was Aikman a Top-10 QB in the NFL BEFORE he ever stepped foot on a NFL field?

Aikman was selected #1 in the 1989 draft, Walsh was #2 overall in the 1989 supplemental draft. Simply put, the Cowboys did not have a QB and knew they needed one desperately. So understandably, they did everything in their power to make sure they got one.

So ...... I have yet to see an example of a YOUNG TOP-10 NFL QB being replaced by an early draft pick.

Still waiting.

The correct decision. Do you guys really believe that Lawrence and Fields are NFL ready? I don't, they will need a couple of years.

The only people i'm really trying to chastise is the hardcore group that thinks it could never happen. Personally i think Dak is your qb in 2021 and probably for the next half decade. I just think it's silly to think this front office wouldn't entertain the idea of bringing in a new qb, especially because of comments jerry makes on a radio show mid season.

Green Bay used their 1 pick on Jordan Love last year.

Edit: I gusess you could say A ROD is not young.

What are your metrics for Young and top 10?

Yeah, Jerry...it's "crazy" to speak about the future of a team when it is 2-7, and has a starting QB who recently suffered a potentially career-altering injury. It's "crazy"...nothing to see here...we love our base, we love our guys, we have our men.

I would agree, i think a trade back of a high pick could be really helpful. I mean in that scenario given you could go LB, DT, S with your first three picks and get help at all levels. You've just got to hit on your picks, and hope this years class in Diggs, Gallimore can continue to get better. I'm not opposed to bringing in a new qb, but the more i think about it the more i think about the perks of a defensive heavy draft.

Jerry would go down as a legendary idiot if he passes on Fields.

Lets say Dak and his agent demand a Mahomes like deal..They would be foolish not to use having a top-5 pick as leverage.

Dak better accept a team friendly deal after coming off a major injury, or he can be traded to the Colts for a first rounder.
And with a top 5 pick in each round you have a much higher probability of just that. Also. You can definitely build a defense if you pay Dak. Atlanta did after paying Ryan and Julio. I think it will be fine.
A top-5 pick in each round is NOT enough to fix this defense. Stop with this crazy talk.

We need at least 5 new starters.

Well in general, 35-36 is still very young. But to be more specific, young in the NFL <= 32.

Why do I say 32? That is about the max age you can expect a player to fulfill a long term contract without taking a major risk due to age, injury and/or production drop off.

I think that is more than reasonable. </shrug>

with qb's coming out of college, it's about perception. aikman was perceived as a franchise qb. so was walsh, but he turned out not to be. but we traded him and got exceptional value for the guy. your point is well taken as to already having a young top 10 nfl qb already running things. off the top of my head, i can't think of any. but if they're top 10, odds are their team isn't in position to be choosing high in the draft.

This is a great example why we have failed for decades. An extremely flawed operational system. Get a real GM and operate as a football team or this will continue.

Is it crazy to think the Cowboys could take a quarterback if they have one of the top picks in next spring’s draft? Yes,” Jerry Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “You’re asking me is it crazy to bring the idea up and I’m answering it, yes. We’re playing games here guys, but it’s not the thing to be talking about here at all. You know, Dak is our quarterback.”

Like father, like son.

pretty pathetic when jones is smarter than some fans.
