The problem is that just a short time ago the same fans who maintain that Jason and LVE both suck now were then asking if we have the best young LB corps in the NFL. LVE and Jaylon had just had a fantastic year and both went to the Pro Bowl. Now, while the pro bowl doesn’t always highlight the star players and sometimes guys get in as alternates, they didn’t go as players who suck, but as players who were shining on a still below average defense.

So....did they “suck” this year because they can’t play, or did they suck because
  1. They played behind a bunch of scrubs at DT
  2. They played in a new defensive scheme that for most of the year was noted by experts as having bad run fits, no gap control
  3. T.hey played in a scheme where everyone on the team was confused and blowing assignments at every level most of the year
  4. They both played at new positions that didn’t utilize either’s strengths. LVE is not a MLB....he shined as WLB. Jaylon is not a WLB.....he was at his best on the strong side with Lee in the middle, and he was decent at MLB when he just read the block and fired into a gap to make a play.
This team must bring in a run-stopping MLB and let Jaylon and LVE play on the outside.

Jaylon sucked in 2019 under Maranelli. I started threads about him then. This is nothing new; it’s just picked up by steam. Sturm also acknowledges Jaylon’s issues date back to 2019.

"Playing linebacker is... It is about taking on blocks, shedding them and tackling the ballcarrier. It is about living for contact and blowing up an iso. Jaylon wears the green dot, and you are telling me he has a hard time reading keys in the running game?"

This is almost verbatim what I’ve said about Jaylon and why the “it’s the scheme” crowd doesn’t understand.

There is no scheme that can completely protect a linebacker. Every scheme requires you to take on blockers, fill gaps, make reads, et cetera.

Who else should get it?
Jaylon won in a landslide on this board. No need for a recount. Others receiving honorable mention over the course of the season, and a certificate: Anthony Brown, XWoods, Awuize, JLewis, DLawrence. There was an Immunity/Exempt Group.

He did.

And that's extremely unexplainable.

This guy has been an enigma since day one and I've about had it. I'm not alone.

They won't move on this year because I truly believe the scheme change was based largely around these two and getting them back to 18 level.

On one hand I hope it works of course, but if it does we are probably looking at a big contract for LVE, which would be yet another disaster.

I argued #4 with someone here when they said the switch was going to be made that it was a mistake.

..I might be odd man out. But I think Jaylon would do well in defense scheme fit to his strengths.

You're right it's not the scheme, but anyone who knows football also knows the DL plays a critical factor in helping a LB stay clean, the less they have to take on blocks the better, because most LBs have a hard time shedding when a DL gets a free run at you and get to the second level.

In that, which I don't know how you'll can post from the article and it not get deleted, Strum talked to a PFF guy he respect and that same guy said his 4 year career compared to other LBs with the same career length was pretty good. His reasoning: he said it's hard to judge a LB in a single year because LBs play fluctuates from year to year, he also said that across the league LB play was down in general. I tried to post it and the chart but it got deleted.

Leaf is capable...

He was capable, I don't know what that has to do with Jaylon, he also had other issues that didn't allow him to reach his potential, by all counts Jaylon don't have those issues and proved on this level that he can be a special player, he did it in 2018 just 2 seasons ago.

5 or 6 plays out of 100s of plays and against an offense he knows inside out.....he also had so many bad misses. no Jaylon is overpaid and can't do the job. he is a liability.

So why was he considered a special player in 2018? Ranked 61 in top 100 by his peers in 2019? in a season where everybody played terrible play on defense , we're writing him off

not sure. maybe scheme. maybe he is declining. maybe he is not doing his film study....but this year he seemed to struggle defensively, not understanding his assignments, hitting the wrong hole and many occasions players just ran right by him, where he seemingly was jogging. something is not right with Jaylon.

Jaylon is so bad he is basically unwatchable. I will not waste any time debating this with anyone who thinks he can play and he is one of Jerrys precious chosen babies. No matter what he does he will be back next year with a C on his jersey playing 99% of the snaps.

As was with everybody else on the defense, heck the little time Leighton was out there he was lost.

I agree Jaylon CAN be good, and I think it’s ok to a acknowledge that and that he was pretty bad in 2020.

Facts are he is most likely a starter in 2021. The cowboys have issues at all levels on defense and you can only replace so many in one offseason. Even if you bring in another LB you still need to hang on to Jaylon with the uncertainty of LVE and a likely Sean lee retirement.

I think the best bet for the cowboys would be to focus on CB, FS, and DT this offseason. Fix the issues around the LB position and see if these guys can’t rebound with some additional support around them, and going back to a more traditional scheme.

I’d focus more on acquiring a depth piece at LB than throwing major assets at the position. I at least have some hope Jaylon and LVE can play better than their 2021 performances, but I can’t say the same for what we have at other spots on defense. If we don’t directly address dbs and dts I don’t see how things will get better.

I’d make Dan Quinn earn his paycheck on developing the LBs on this roster. He has a pretty good track record of that.

You will never have a good defense with Jaylon Smith at LB with a C on his jersey playing 98% of the snaps. He is pure cancer. He would have taken down the 86 Bears all by himself. I just had a mental image of what he would look like on that team and I laughed out loud.

To a man with a hammer, everything is a nail. You should send this post to all nfl teams in lieu of a resume to be a gm.

How does that change anything I shared? He did go to the pro bowl, correct? Dallas was talked about as if we had LBs set for years, right? He still had a very good year. He’s not garbage. He just needs to be used in a way that fits his skills.

You’re hanging onto 2018.

Jaylon played poorly in 2019.

What exactly are Jaylon’s skills?
