People - this is the most critical step for the owner must decide what he wants his team to be and who are the people best qualified to achieve that. Just wanting to win a trophy isn't enough. He must hire the best GM to build that team and must be able to develop a thorough plan to get there.

Planning - isn't a year to year exercise. Planning takes methodical attention to detail and monitoring to make certain every act, every coach, every player adheres to the plan. The planning stage should be with just the owner and GM and the following stage is back to people to execute the plan. The HC must buy into the plan or be able to convince the owner and GM of a better plan. They must all be of one mind and every move filtered through the plan. The HC should fit the plan before he is ever hired.

Patience - should be built into the plan with a timeline to achieve the goal and progress monitored more than end result; although, many well laid plans achieve success ahead of schedule. Patience requires full belief in the plan, without that the lack of patience will derail the plan.

Perseverance - every good plan has pitfalls and those cannot be allowed to derail the plan. Flexibility to go around what you cannot go through, and not deviate from the plan, is key. Some plans are achieved just because of perseverance.

Preparation - this is the trickiest part, after people, because preparation does not mean just to be ready to execute the plan but to be prepared for when the plan begins to drift off target. Injuries, turnover of those hired to help implement the plan and unforeseen potholes should not only be anticipated but prepared for in advance so the least amount of time is spent on reaction to the event and focused on overcoming it. Sticking to the plan takes preparation.

All seems rather simplistic and duh, doesn't it? Because it is. Unless the owner has no plan or an unworkable plan, then everything done is to achieve failure because failure was within the plan.

Want to know why this franchise has done so little in 25 years? All begins with that first P, People, the owner and GM do not have each other to keep them on the plan so the owner/GM spends his time preparing for another plan. Plans built upon failed plans.

Pride - the refusal to change how you operate despite a quarter century of it not producing desired results.

Until the Cowboys get past that "P" the rest will be hard to come by.

People - priority one is to not make Jerry uncomfortable.
Planning - win now!
Patience - win now! (unless it's your hand-picked "next Landry", in which case you give him 10 years)
Perseverance - how many times have we changed defenses in the past decade?
Preparation -

Fully agree on people being the most important - the right people will do all the other Ps.

I didn't think CouchCoach was a motivational speaker. Do you do motivational seminars at $500 a person?

Should add “pissed” to the list. Anger can lead to team success. Sometimes you wonder if most of the players on the team even care. Some seem to care more about a paycheck.

Imo, the hc is the key. GM's are bean counters. Their job is salary cap management. It was Andy reid who vetted and drafted mahomey. Gutsy thing to do considering the texas tech qb history in the nfl. In retail, it's location, location, location. In the nfl, it's coaching, coaching, coaching. I don't think Mac's that guy.

Predator - A con man that swoops in to purchase a storied football franchise to turn it into a vanity project

Pretend - Act like you care about winning despite the fact that all evidence suggests it’s just a vanity project.

Pathological- Lie and deceive your fans. Constantly and unrelentingly.

Patronize- Let them eat cake once and a while like hiring Parcells.

Pathetic - Having a playoff record akin to the bottom feeders in the league yet try to live off the past.

Coach, outstanding post.
I’ll add a few other p’s to what our current leaders are doing:
  • Pillage- as in pillaging the fans pockets for tickets, parking, concessions and merchandise.
  • Pope- Jerry is the football equivalent of the Pope- in place and in the job until death.
  • Pain- as in what long suffering Cowboys fans have endured for a quarter century waiting on at least a divisional playoff win.
  • Patience- what is required in large quantities for our fans to keep the faith.
