Why do we suck so bad in free agency?

The one part you can argue is those two were acquired to fit the Ryan defense....then they fired him soon thereafter and went to a scheme that didn't value corners IIRC.
Always been a issue. The personnel they take vs the scheme. I don't understand the idea of just hoping a guy can play in your scheme as opposed to going with a guy who fits best in your scheme.....

Why? Because we don't have a GM familiar with the players in the league. Jerry is more of a ceremonial GM. There is no system or consistent vision of what "cowboy football" looks like. Therefore, when we look at players to bring in, we have no idea whose going to fit and thrive on our team.
Pretty good assessment

Do you think this brain trust has a menu?

You go to the grocery store to buy some vittles to fix for dinner but you don't have a menu in mind. That filet mignon looks nice but rather expensive and since you're really not sure what you want, that ground meat will do nicely because it's so versatile. And after all, you have to eat.

Byron Jones was an All Pro in 2018. He should have always been used as a Cornerback not a safety at the start not wasted for three years as a safety. I agree Claiborne was a train wreck (plus we gave up draft capital to acquire him) and Taco well less said the better.

I see the defense being top 12 next season. Better DC, less injuries hopefully and we will surely focus on defense in the next draft.
Definitely should have started as CB since the beginning. Yes, he had the All-Pro season, we still had to replace him. Our evaluations on defense are sub-par.

I do agree the defense will be better, especially since I believe we'll be playing with a lead more. I expect big years from Gregory and Lawrence.

People complaining why they are not involved in the Top tier FA. How many have in the last 10 years lived upto the contract. Of the positions I would gamble in FA it would be OL and until this year that was of not an area of need. Top Tier FA are great if you are 1-2 players away and overall ROI is average is to slightly below average with hopes they still produce at an elite level but you have to be fine with top 12-20 range to be realistic. Where you need to be good is signing the young mid tier players they wont break the bank. Sort of like the two Smiths in GB signed in FA two years ago. Mid tier you actually have a better chance they figured it out and take off where as 8 year vet that has been a "superstar" is now losing the race to father time.

Stephen "Penny Pinching " Jones. The man who pushed his father against a wall because he didn't want him to sign Deion Sanders to a mega contract. Even after the Cowboys lost it's best corner at the time Kevin Smith who ruptured his Achilles in week 1 of that season.

If Jerry listens to Stephen the Cowboys don't win the Super bowl that year.

Drafting is all fine and dandy, we don’t even do that well....

But we are flat out terrible in free agency...get cheap scrubs of whom many don’t even make the team or get cut after a few games

Their FA plan has been to try to find cheap and or aging players that can be stopgaps for a season or two and it has backfired, big time.

Clinton-Dix, McCoy, Poe, Olawale, Cobb, Fleming, Stephen Paea, etc...

Cobb was about the only one who was productive.

Stephen Jones doesn't want to spend money.

Drafting and free agency are both total lotteries. No team is good or bad at either, just lucky or unlucky.
Seems like we are always unlucky. Good organizations like the Steelers, Packers and Seahawks seem to always be lucky when it comes to drafting and free agency.

Agree. Love the way Gregory came back last season.

Two things he doesn't have....a ton of mileage on his body and a ton of money to his name.

If we are to believe his has finally grown up him and Lawrence can really get things done...especially if they have anyone in the middle worth anything.

Good point. Quinton Jefferson and Shelby Harris where both younger and better than Poe/McCoy but Jerry likes the flashy names so he went with the latter

This is where McClay is supposed to step in and steer the org in the right direction.
What exactly is he doing?

Lamb, Diggs, Romo, Witten, Tyron, Martin....we have been pretty decent at drafting.
Although Taco over Watt still hurts.

Yep, that's the truth + infinity! A swift kick to the gonads would be much preferred!

We don’t want someone else’s leftover prima donna. Free agency is for that one or two players to put you over the top if you are a contender.

It's not really free agency that we're so terrible at -- it's a matter of committing far too much capital to undeserving players! :omg:
