Dallas Cowboys: What to do about Jaylon Smith

I'm not sure FO sees Jaylon as anywhere near the problem fans see/media see. I mean we've seen nothing from coaches/Jerry to suggest his starting position is in jeopardy. Not to mention, name the last player Jerry paid not to play. In other words, good or bad, he will start as they're paying him starting pay,

FRISCO, Texas – As always, this is the uncertain time of the year.

Roughly one-third of NFL rosters turn over every offseason as each club looks for ways to improve its fortunes moving forward. The Cowboys are no different, as they'll face many tough decisions in the coming months.

With that in mind, we're evaluating each position on the roster and what choices face the front office in 2021. Part 4 focuses on the linebackers.

It’s not just Jaylon but LVE, two “bargain” injury prone players that Jerry was praised for drafting because “we draft so well”. I will be interested to see what they do with LVE when his time comes.

We didn't even get a bargain for LVE. He was a reach even assuming no medical issues. Looked like he was worth it as a rookie, though. I still haven't given up hope on him.

For Jaylon, I think his leg regressed in 2019, and unless they *know* it has improved, they should cut him. I see no prospects for him being a quality LB with his evident physical limitations.

True, good points. I hope the best for LVE (and for Jaylon) but Jaylon became one of the few players on this team that I went from liking a lot to not being able to stand.

Alright. I've thought a lot about Jaylon Smith and this is what I've decided:

  • He's not as bad as he looks, it's just that when he does look bad, he looks laughably bad.
  • In his entire life he has never been as bad at football relative to his peers as he was in 2020.
  • Everyone on this defense looked bad in the new defense installed over zoom.
  • We have a new DC and I trust that DC to better match scheme to talent.
  • Fans hate Jaylon more than DCs hate Jaylon.
When you put it all together, what I would probably do is let it ride and either give him another year or end up cutting him when I go down to my final 53.

I know a lot of you will disagree on that but I just don't believe we're going to find so many good LBs this offseason that we have no room for Jaylon Smith on the roster. As much as fans hate on Jaylon, at worst he's still better at playing LB in the NFL than all but like 100 people on this planet. Unless 5 or 6 of those 100 are all wearing stars in August, we're better off with him.

Deal with the money next year, when there's less penalty for moving on. No, it's not ideal, but the bed has been made and now we lie in it.

You're just trying to rationalize a bad situation

Jaylon is absolute garbage and his stench infects the rest of the defense

I would cut him yesterday

I'm not trying to rationalize anything. I'm trying to be rational in how I choose to address the problem.

There is no single reason anyone can point to with evidence that says Jaylon Smith is somehow a cancer to this team. He's not a bad attitude, he's not a trouble maker. He's a good dude that looks dumb as hell sometimes that fans love to hate on.

You're simply choosing to have less cap and less players because you hate Jaylon. I'm trying to field a football team and I have almost no secondary and a crappy DL and a QB who wants paid. I'm not spending cap space to get rid of my best LB, 2nd best if you believe LVE is somehow so much better that it makes up for missing games and playing injured, and tbh I can't even confirm LVE plays better than Smith to begin with.

What's next, you're going to tell me LVE needs to go too?

And anyway, do you even have a plan to fill out the LB spot once you cut him that doesn't involve spending money we don't have, or reaching for a player in the draft, or neglecting our totally barren secondary (besides like 2 guys)?

Face it, we're a team with a bad defense. We don't have the talent waiting in the wings to just cut one of our top LBs because he swipes and fans hate it. Bring me a good actual strategy to replace him and I'll listen but we have needs everywhere on defense and right now, a LB who shows up and is healthy and can tackle reasonably well is about as good as anything else we have on that side.

He's no long term answer but yeah, for one more year I dont have a better plan as of Feb 2021.

put him up in the stadium dancing, he will be the highest-paid dancer but at least jerry won't have to cut him. every now and then he can dive out after a fan and jump on his back as the fan goes toward the restrooms.

LOL, all this is crap
You’re rationalizing again
Take a step back and look at it objectively

You need to build a team
For that you need to build a culture
Culture is built through common purpose and finding football platers who will put the team above themselves
Jaylon is the exact opposite of everything I just laid out
He poisons the team by his self aggrandizing attitude, running around tackles, showing up late to tackles and pretending like he did it, celebrating a tackle 10 yards in your own territory. If I’m on that defense I would absolutely despise someone like Jaylon on my team

We have plenty of resources to replace idiots like Jaylon including draft picks. I bet I can find a LB in this draft in rds 2-3 that plays the position better than him

Cut him yesterday and start building a real defense but of course moron Jerry won’t do that

At the very least it's not the unreasonable stance it's made out to be by some of the "cut him" reaction types. We still need to field a football team.

You're just listing things you and other fans don't like to see, and then saying the classic "I'll just draft a guy". We got LVE in the first and he's not demonstrably better. It's a crapshoot, and we're full of needs. How many have you posted about just taking in "rds 2-3"?

Show me proof LVE is better, or the team of professionals can't handle Jaylon being dumb, or that a better option is available. You have no strategy. Just things you want to happen.

Is his nerve still growing? Maybe he’ll get better when the nerve is done growing.

Im not even going to look or rate this past season for any player. It was FUBR! In 2019 he was that bad and Im going to wait and see how he responds after this past season. How anyone could see that it wasnt a mistake to try and change a scheme up with no OTA's No preseason is beyond me. Some say they were Dumb , did they just get dumb over night?? I dunno maybe so but they should have this next year to state their case. We just cant go cutting and trading every player its just not possible.

Best thing to do is bring in a LB to compete against Jaylon n LVE for their spots.

gotta go into the season assuming that Jaclyn will be on the sideline and LVE may or may not be healthy. The only reason I think LVE plays well this year is because his contract is almost up for renewal and he knows it

There were rumblings about the Cowboys wanting to see more from him, so I don’t think they’re oblivious.

Jerry praising him in the media means nothing in actuality.

154 combo tackles.

need more.

If he's at MLB on opening day.. then these coaches are stupid? or is it Jerry? or all of the above? But nothing worse than never actually learning a lesson which is a staple for this team!
Great point but I'm sure there was going to be some element of "I can fix him" from whoever got the DC job.

Thats what Jerry wanted to hear.

Smith is essentially playing for his job also, although I'm not sure his problem is effort.

I don't at all see Jerry not banking on his new scheme to fix everything and everyone.

Its beyond ridiculous how people around here can recognize such obvious problems but the team can't.

Guess that comes back to Jerry being pals with these guys......its choose your dysfunction in Dallas. There are plenty that all root from one single source.
