Is the 2021 offense set up for a rookie QB?

OK, let's see if we can leave Prescott out of this thread and just discuss the comparison of the offense he stepped into in 2016 with little prep time and the offense of 2021.

The OL is not as good but with a healthy Collins and Big Smitty, it can be very close.

The run game is still good and I believe the 1-2 punch of Elliott/Pollard is a top 10 one and they might even add to that in this draft.

The WR corps is better than the one in 2016 with far better route runners, any rookie QB's best buddies. A WR that is where he is supposed to be is a gift but 3 of them? That's riches.

The TE's are good, not great. but with this WR corps, good is better than good.

The D is the ? with any QB but if they go the rookie QB route, the savings can be applied to a couple of first week's FA D guys to add immediate impact. New, and better, DC and healthy players and I like their chances. Especially in the East.

Add McC and Moore to the growth curve of a young QB and I like his chances. Not going to get a shot at Lawrence, Wilson, Fields and probably not Lance but Mac Jones, Kellen Mond or Kyle Trask? They played in power offenses with excellent skill positions and good OC's. Jones and Trask were late bloomers but Mond has been through trial by fire. 2 of the 3 should be there at 10 and possibly, all 3.

This is not about the draft but if you feel the offense is a setup for a rookie QB, which in the end is about addressing that defense, my ulterior motive. If this turns into a draft discussion, I will move it to that Zone.

And I think it's about the rookie, not keeping Dalton because I think he'll be too pricey for a backup. You take one with the idea that he's QB1 come September and you turn the team over to him and give him a better D than the last QB had.

If we really can't resolve the contract situation with our current QB1 then we have no choice but to draft a QB in round 1. The decision then is chuck them in at the deep end or sign a cheap vet to nurse them along. In either scenario we can't expect immediate success. To answer your question if this is a rookie friendly set up? God alone knows.

We’ve pretty much had a qb friendly offense for years, except maybe 1 season before Amari Cooper got here.

Prescott was pretty bad during that time. I believe if you get someone in his tier, they would produce similar results If not better.

If they can’t agree to terms, they need to tag and trade him, re-sign Dalton as the starter and trade up for a QB to groom. They missed out on Wentz at a bargain. He would kill it in this offense. Wilson and Watson would too but they are too expensive.

so your idea is lets say take a ferrari and put a honda engine in it, and then put top notch breaks on the car and now you got a good thing!?

this defense needs, 7 or 8 starters....and two starters may make it better, but by how much? and then a rookie QB, learning on the job, how far will the offense drop? and which Rookie QB you are going to swear by and tell us he is a can't miss prospect? 4 out of 5 first round QBs, turn out average or worse....... Trask? who has arm strength issues.....Kellen Mond? a mid round QB at best.....Mac Jones, who is a big question mark. all of whom need a few years of development....and so you either fail and have to start over again. or they turn to be good top 10 QB (none of them is elite). and then you have to pay them 45/50M and here we go again.....

The Cowboys offense is as good as if not better than any other team in the league for a day 1 rookie starter.

But it would still be stupid to replace Dak with a rookie in the name of upgrading the defense.

It may be set up for a rookie QB, however is Kellen Moore willing to dial back the pass happy stuff, and utilize Zeke the way they did in 2016.
And yes Zeke haters, he can still be very productive.

I think Jerry has verbally painted himself into a corner with all the Dak proclamations and promises. It made little sense to not bring in Wentz for a pittance and focus on the defense. However, it is not clear Howie Roseman would have traded Wentz to a team inside the division.

Why not, that would be like sabotaging the other team unloading Wentz to them. :lmao:

The here we go again if they do hit on a QB would, hopefully, not be with so many players in the top 6 paid at their position. The problem isn't a 40M QB, it's all the other contracts and the timing of this.

Any QB is a risk and they got lucky on a UDFA and 4th rounder. They keep picking until they hit but paying this QB 40M along with the other contracts and this team is going nowhere.

I think your high on those 7 or 8 starters but being able to plug in a couple of proven mercs would expedite that process.

That sounds like Jones thinking. Until that defense gets seriously upgraded, this team does nothing.

True or not about the defense, it is passing offense that drives success. Things need to fall into place after that.

Sacrificing anything from the passing game to improve the defense just sets you up for failure, especially because there is no defensive player in the league who comes close to the value or game day impact that even mid-tier quarterbacks provide.

I dont believe the current oline can consistently perform like the 2016 line. They are older and have been breaking down. We've added talent, but we've lost more @ center and due to injuries.

I also think Zeke is a different back now. He can grind, but he's no where near the threat of his rookie season. He was special that year.

The defense is another story all together. In short I do not believe we are set up as well as 2016, for a rookie.

Depends who the Rookie QB is.

it sounds like rubbing paul to pay peter. lets scheme on QB, get a couple of defensive players, hoping the team over all is better....

and your idea is to keep picking...well we did and we hit on one, now, I don't like the market price and I want to go picking again. only to develop him and then not like the price and go picking again.

and tell me if you are happy as starters with the following

Gallimore
Hill
Woods
Auwzie
Wilson
Jaylon
3rd LB (insert name)
LVE

you think the above is a good foundation for building a defense? no, I am not high. I am a realist....

and we all got giddy about Wilson. he was part of a defense that was historically bad....only showed up when we played 4 win teams and their back up QBs...

LVE would be the tops on that list and that ain't saying much.

No, we didn't keep picking. Where have all the QB picks been since Aikman was #1 overall?

The Cowboys have been among the worst at keeping that position in the rotation.
