Guys saying they wouldn't offer Dak 25 million a year proves it's a personal problem and nothing to do with his talent.

Saying Dak isn't worth 25 million a year is laughable

What I don't get is how some people can be comfortable at, say, $36m but not, say, $41m.

What exactly do people think the team is going to do with that $5m? Are we worried about having enough money for a kicker and punter? Someone please answer this for me. Difference-making players make $10m minimum.
That’s a pretty good point. But look at it this way...the team is going to be hard pressed to win with Dak even at $35M per year. At $41-42M it gets prohibitive.

If you compare guys like Rodgers, Peyton Manning, etc to Tom Brady, what is the real difference? APY on their contracts.

Manning and Rodgers suffocated their teams with their contracts. Both should be neck and neck with Brady in terms of SB wins but they are not. I know The Hoodie is part of that, but I think the salary cap is the biggest reason NE has all those SBs.

The Hoodie ruthlessly moved on from players and managed to keep a very good team together for a long time. The rest are cyclical at best.

If we sign Dak for $40m, we have a two year window to win, or get really lucky in the draft. Otherwise the window closes.

I want Dak to be a Cowboy but this whole thing is stupid on Dak’s part. He is pissing off tons of endorsements by ensuring we can’t assemble a long term team around him without quite a bit of luck.

Honestly, I think Dak is a very good, not great, QB that is going to be paid like a great QB because the market is insanely inflated. These QB deals are team killers. I don't even think Mahomes is worth "Mahome's Money" because signing him to that big of a deal has effectively given that team about a 2-3 year window to win before the wheels come flying off in free agency departures and they need to rebuild unless they hit on a bunch of cheap replacement players in the draft.
Mahomes’ contract is actually pretty team friendly.

Lol I been thinking the same thing. What does an extra $3mil or $5mil get you that makes that line uncrossable? Answer is not much and certainly not enough to have any major impact on our defense. If the qb market says he should be paid $40 mil so be it. No different than buying stocks or cars or whatever it is. The market is what the market is.
The difference between Dak getting $35M per year and $42m per year is a very good 1Tech in free agency.

Dak was already offered $35 mil for 5 years and he balked at the number of years to propose 4. It seems the length of contract was the main thing holding up an agreement at that time. I imagine this to be a reasonable starting point at this juncture. The FO is in no position to propose less than that, since they've already proposed it at the end of 2020.

Obviously the contract length remains to be resolved. I felt that a five year contract was in the team's best interest but of course, that issue still remains to be settled. I seriously doubt anything approaching the range of Mahomes' contract will be acceptable to the Dallas front office. In the remaining days of bargaining, the $$ amount should approach the $35 million range, imho.

Or maybe they genuinely don’t have anything against him, but don’t think Dak is that good?

Nah, it's pure Dak hate. No different since day 1 with the same posters. And the starting over Romo fueled the hate even more.

I want him to have a chance to win so I d like the team to let him leave. This team can’t win with bad contracts like Zeke, Jaylom, and paying too money for an offensive line that is falling apart. Management couldn’t even take advantage of Dak when he was only making $465k a year.

This is pretty much why I said let him walk. That was the closest option to tag and trade. When you're building up a crappy team you don't start by paying the QB a ton of money. It's almost as if people think the Cowboys are going to be contenders over the next few years. They're not. With our without Dak.

If this was prime Aikman instead of Dak, would the same be applied to him? Let him walk?

I voted 30 to 34 and that would be painful but that would be the realistic market for Dak. I heard he wants 44 mil and that is just insane and tells me he is gone. I wouldn't even tag him. He is completely untradable because nobody is going to come close to paying that. Oh and we still haven't seen him perform since his ankle was put back together with a metal plate and screws.

Dak can't carry a team so either take 25 million/year or let's get as much draft capital him as we can. When he leaves all of his slobbers can follow him as a fan of the player, not the team.

We won't miss him or his followers.

Im not a fan of giving Dak 40 million , but that will be a bargain in just a few years
Not really. Dak's agent insists on a short term deal so you get to pay the new market value at that time.

Trade him and his problem agent. Lets move on already.

Knowing he was 8-8 with a fully loaded offense in 2019, I let him walk. We couldn't win when he was making nothing. Paying his 35-40x more doesn't improve our chances. In fact, it makes our chances of rebuilding far worse. If this was a competitive team, then maybe I stick it out to see what happens over the next 4-5 years. It is not a competitive team. There are too many holes and no quality depth outside of WR.

So youre saying 40 wont be so large number in a few years?

But reportedly wants $40m now over the next 3 years......Mahomes and Watson arent getting anywhere near that, they are getting the $40m figure in exchange for long term contracts.

Dak can't have both short term market setting contract and chance to hit free agency again after the CAP rises under the new CBA.

If for nothing else, we cant produce a team that will compete in that short term due to the woefully poor defense and no CAP money to speed up it's improvement via free agency signings.

I would tag and trade anyone at this point. Pretend the same rules applied when Aikman came into the league in 1989. After his 3rd season which was 1991, you give him an extension. The quarterback is good and the team is good. If our Cowboys were looking like them I'd say pay Dak.

Same with Buffalo. They have improved and made it to the AFCCC. They have a very good team, pay the QB. You have to, they're contenders now. The Cowboys aren't. Same could be said for Cleveland. The same cannot be said for the Jets. Darnold isn't worth 20 million a year to the Jets. They stink. Now is not the time to be paying a high priced QB just to go along for the ride.
